Chapter 18

Tris's POV

"Mondays suck." Christina says.

"I beg to differ! It's one of my only days off." Tobias says, he fixes his backpack on his shoulders.

Today was Monday, school. Yay. Chris, Tobias and I were walking down the hallway to our lockers.

"It's worth it though." He says and unlocks his locker. "Good pay."

"Ugh, I have history. Talk to you later, Tris." Christina says. "Bye, Tobias."

She waves then walks to her class.

"Science, great." I mutter under my breath.

"I have science." He smiles.

"How could I forget, we had to dissect a frog with Uri."

He laughs. "That was fun."

"Have you talked to him lately?"

"The dead frog?" Tobias asks.

I roll my eyes. "Uriah, retard!"

He smiles. "Yesterday. He's having problems with Marlene."

"I know. We all are."

"Did he tell you what she did to him?" Tobias asks me in a low tone.

"No, what happened."

He sighs. "I don't know if it was only meant for me then, shit."

"Tobias you have to tell me now!" I beam at him.

He stays quiet for a little while.

"Oh no, don't tell me she cheated on him! Cliché much!"

"No, she didn't.She's just being a bitch. She never let's him talk anymore, she interrupts him."

Marlene, what is up with you!

"I'll try to talk to her." I start walking to science.

"Just don't dig yourself in a deeper hole for your friendship." Tobias says and takes my hand, squeezing.

I smile at him.

"Okay."

I walk up the steps to Marlene's house.

"Hello?" A lady answers the door.

"Hi, is Marlene here?"

"No, she's at the funeral house." The lady says. It's only now I notice her face is beet red, like she's been crying.

"If you don't mind me asking, why?" I ask cautiously.

The lady starts it weep. "H-her parents."

My eyes go wide. No, not her parents!

"No, what happened?"

"Car crash." Was all the lady could manage. "Last week."

That's why she hasn't been to school lately.

"I'm so sorry." I say. "That's terrible."

"Yeah, I'm her aunt from out of town, I came down to bring Marlene back to California with me. After the funeral were leaving the week after."

Oh my god. This is much worst then what I thought.

"No, she can't move away!" I beam. "She has friends and other family. Her dream college!"

"I'm her only hope! Her only family! Who are you anyway?" She scowls.

"I'm Beatrice, her best friend."

She furrows her eyebrows. "That's you? Oh."

"Thanks for the information, good bye." I walk back to my car and pull out.

----

"Yes, Sunday will work." I hear Marlene tell the lady at the counter.

"Okay." The lady says and types it out on the computer.

I tip toe down the hall to Marlene.

"Mar?"

She turn around so fast I think she almost fell.

Wow. She looks like a mess! Her hair is a rats nest, her eyes red.

"What are you doing here?! I can't -"

"Just listen." I pause. "I'm so sorry, Marlene, I didn't know what happened! I can't believe your parents passed away, they where amazing people. Mar I know you are mad at me for some reason, I don't know why, but I am here for you, every step of the way. Your my sister, my best friend, your my bae!" I pause. "Let me hug you." I smile.

She frowns and a tear falls down her cheek. She brings me into a huge hug and starts to sob.

"I don't even know- I can't-." She sobs.

"Shhh, it's okay."

"The funerals on Sunday, everyone's invited." Her breath hitches. "I'm moving to California, next week." She cries. "I'm moving away from you all. From Uri."

She pulls back from the embrace. "I can't do the long distance."

"Have you talked to anyone?"

"No, just you." She sniffs, "I'm trying to talk myself into talking to Uriah, but I fell so bad for how I treated him."

"It's okay. What are you doing later? Come by my house, want me to get everyone together?"

"That would be great. To get my mind off things." She smiles.

"Okay, come by at 6."

"See you then."

I smile and walk out of the building.

--------------

"What did you get all of us here for?" Zeke asks.

"Okay, so. You know how Marlene has been distant." I start, everyone groans.

"Well, her parents got in a car crash last week. They passed away. And if that isn't enough, she's moving to California with her aunt."

"What?!" Uriah stands up. "She's moving?!"

"Yes, but here. Let her explain."

Marlene walks out if my room.

"Hey guys." She says slowly.

Everyone jumps up and bombards her with questions.

"Wait, guys. Let me apologize-"

"No, we're sorry." Uriah says.

"No! Let me talk!" She pauses. "Just because I'm going through a hard time doesn't mean I can take it out on you." She smiles. "I love you guys. You're my family."

"We'll have each other, no matter what." I say.

We hug and go into the story.
