It was past 3:30 in the morning when Tanner walked through the door.
"Where have you been?"
"Sipping on a single beer at the bar down the street."
"How many cigarettes did you smoke? I can smell you from here."
"A pack and a half."
"So you haven't smoked in two years but you smoke a pack and a half in one night."
"Yeah."
Tanner ran her fingers through her own hair as Autumn folded her arms.
"Take a shower, I'm going to bed now that you're home."
"We aren't going to let them get married, right?"
"Well you didn't even let them finish."
"They're 16 fucking years old, Autumn, they should be going to house parties not thinking about fucking wedding bands. This is crazy to even think about agreeing to!"
"Lower your voice or go back to the bar."
"Alright, I'm sorry. I just don't see how you could even think about any answer but no."
Autumn's arms rested on Tanner's shoulder as she pulled her closer.
"Because I know how it feels to love someone so much you just want to be with them 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You know how that feels, too."
"I do, baby, but she's our little girl. She can be a girlfriend but she can't be a wife, not at 16."
"I told them to rethink it."
"I'm exhausted, I don't want to continue this conversation."
"Take a shower you smell horrible, the smoke is going to make me sick."
"I'm sorry."
Autumn kissed Tanner's cheek before untucking the tattooed girl's shirt from her pants.
"Get cleaned up so we can go to bed, love."
Mac slipped into bed beside Danny who was silently crying.
"You know I love you no matter if we are legally married or not."
"I know I just was wanting to be valid, you know?"
"We are valid, our love is real, baby. Everyone knows that. It is a little crazy."
"You're right, I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize."
Mac kissed Danny's lips as the crickets outside continued.
Danny opened her eyes to the sun shining brightly in the window as Mac shifted underneath her.
Tanner knocked on the bedroom door before entering.
"You two awake?"
Danny hid her face in Mac's neck too scared to look at the tattooed covered girl.
"Yeah."
"Be downstairs in 5."
Danny slowly made her way into the kitchen with Mac close behind.
"Sit."
They sat down across from the older women on the bar stools.
"I am sorry that I blew up on you. Even if I am your parent, I should always give you the opportunity to fully explain what you're thinking. However, I still am saying no at least for now you two are only sophomores in high school, aright?"
"We didn't think it through, Momma."
"Biggest lesson I've learned is you don't need a piece of paper to make your love real. Now I have to go to the office to meet some guys."
"Do you want me to drive you, babe?"
"I'll be fine."
"Alright. I love you."
"I love you, too. You look sick go lay back down and I'll grab some lunch on my way home."
"I feel kind of sick."
"Come on. Let's go upstairs."
Tanner lead her wife into their bedroom before helping her in to bed.
"You want me to stay?"
"How long will you be?"
"About an hour, I just have to sign some contracts and talk with a few guys. I'll be quick."
"I'll be okay. I'm going to sleep, anyways."
"Call me if you feel worse, alright?"
"I will."
