She looks at them and wonders to herself,
How do they do it?
Their easy grace,
Their lack of fear,
Their eyes so bright with a hope
That she has not felt
In a long time.

They swan around the place
With a confidence she can only dream of.
Effortless, at ease.
They don't have terror in their eyes,
Or darkness in their hearts.
She tries to remember,
Was she ever like them
Once?

They hang onto each other's arms,
Laughing, chatting,
Lighting up the room
With their smiles.
She pictures herself as one of them,
Long, lazy legs, hair streaming
Down her back like silk.

She wishes she could be like that,
Sheltered, sweet, and confident,
Only caring about exams and boyfriends
Instead of the flashbacks
That poison her blood
And the trauma that haunts her eyes.

She will never be a normal girl.
