It has been a long while since I have seen light. Maybe... a year and a half? I have a bandana over my eyes all the time now. If I do have a little depth perception, I don't want to use it. If I do, I'll be taunting myself forever over something I can't have.
"(Y/N)." Dante calls through the dorm door, "It's time for class." I tapped with a stick I had found in preparation for this, feeling the floor. I told Dante that I needed a guide because I never qualified for a service dog, it was convenient because he had graduated two years before me.
After we were clearly outside, I could hear the low chatter and the bikes on the pavement, as well as feel the sun on the rest of my face. I was chatting with Dante, only about random things until we went inside. I could hear the hum of the ac, the clicking of keyboards, and the chatter was now a low whisper.
I carefully ran my hand along the Braille after we reached my hallway. Dante and I were in a comfortable silence, this was normal because of how long we had been doing this. I requested straight away he never tell me which door I was in front of so I could feel a little independent still.
After class, I found Dante waiting outside the classroom, and I went up on my tiptoes, our sign for, 'lean down I want a kiss'. I was never too tall, and I felt cute when it was invented. In my dreams he and I had done more than what we had. I was graduating later this month, so I was stressing on studying for my finals. All of which I'd aced so far, which is good for being new at taking tests in braille.
Today I had my last day in my Science class, which is when we're getting our tests back. We all waited with baited breath as the first test was passed back to Nicole, I could basically see the bad grade from her reaction, and, I'll give credit where it's due, she was one of the smartest kids in class. I could hear my classmates gulp as the professor made his way up the stairs to give the rest of the tests back and then come back down. You'll be fine, you're smart enough to at least have passed. I heard a growl as the tests were passed back, but mine had a grade punched in with braille, unless you can read braille, you won't know my grade. I kept a poker face as I ran my fingers over the bumps that read '100 - good job, (Y/N).'
After he passed back all sixty-two tests, I heard him clasp his hands and I could practically feel his smile. "I know you guys did your best on this last test, and there certainly those who did better than others, they exceeded in fact. If I call your name, please stand so we may congratulate you." He went up the steps and I heard him tapping on desks as he came down. Tap, tap, "Ian, ninety six." There was six distinct, coordinated claps from the class. Tap, tap, "Chloe, ninety three." Three distinct claps. It went on like this for a good amount of time, until I heard names I didn't exactly expect to hear called. Tat, tap. "Gene, 98, good job." Tat, tat "Dante, ninety nine, congratulations." I stiffed as I noticed how close his voice was and that I was coming up soon; I was next, in fact. Tat, tat, tat, "(Y/N), one hundred, good job." I only heard one person not clapping, and it came from the desk next to me. She waited until the class finished clapping to snap.
"No fair. She cheated. I saw her." She screamed. "I know what happened. It's pity points because she's blind." She kept on, and soon other students were joining in, tearing me down. I tried to get out of there, but I bumped into multiple things, as well as having to deal with people shoving me. Someone dead legged me as another pushed me down the stairs outside of the classroom, I didn't yell, cry, or react. They're just trying to get attention and a reaction. Follow the signs, you'll be outside at some point. I tripped my way out of the school and counted my paces to my dorm building. Eighty paces. I counted, keeping my head down and focusing on not crying until I got to my dorm. Eighty. I felt for the door and a stranger told me it was to my left a little.
I bust into my dorm, grateful Laurance wasn't home to see this. I turned around and locked the door, paying mind to take the extra key that is normally above the doorway, knowing that Dante knows about it. I just need to cry. Is what I thought to myself, feeling the tears begin their journey down my face and into my pillow. I sat there, sobbing, until I heard knocks on the door and kept quiet, knowing Dante was trying to check in on me.
"(Y/N)? (Y/N), please open the door. Please?" I ignored him, waiting for him to go away. I heard him searching for the key on top of the doorframe to no avail. I heard him sigh, then I heard a thump on the floor with a following mumble, "I'll wait for my princess." My heart swelled as I drifted off to sleep, exhausted from sobbing so hard.
