Okay, first day of school. You can do this, you got the snacks, the new backpacks, and all of the school supplies, and you're ready to wake up the three kids... Dante snored loudly and it was seven a.m. Make that four... I said as I smacked him on the shoulder, spooking him awake a little. "You ready to go wake them up?" He nodded sleepily, and when he just lays back down, I shoved him off the bed. He was spooked awake again and I was reminded of when I was in that coma, and how the other Dante would wake up quickly every time. "C'mon, we have to go wake them up." I go up to Grant's room and check the sign we put on the door ever since they decided they were gender fluid. They put up labels on the sign with how they feel every day, so I don't walk in accidentally on a day when they feel male. Okay, sign says... she/her. So I call her Natalie today. "Natalie? I'm coming in, sweetheart." I knocked and went in, taking note that this is the fourth day she's felt this gender. I walked in and saw her still sleeping, half hanging off the bed, but still somehow cuddling a pillow. "Natalie," I shook her, "Time to wake up. Today's your first day of eighth grade, you gotta show 'em who's top dog." She rolled over and hit me in the arm, upset I woke her up.

"Mooom... it's not even... Oh my Irene! It's the first day of school!" She launched herself out of bed and as I left I told her breakfast would be ready in an hour. I repeated the process with Winter and heard Jackson smack Dante because Dante the Dumb decided to go into his room and yell. I smiled and made breakfast, bacon and eggs with toast and chocolate milk; a favorite I'd learned over the summer and we decided that it would only be made on special school days, like the first day, the last day, and EOC days (end of course exams, for example, it's the dreaded STAAR for Texas.)

I smiled as I heard the horde of sleepy people trod down the stairs, smiling at them and giving them a hearty breakfast, and making sure Dante got his coffee. I was the working parent here, while Dante just kind of a stay-at-home/odd job parent. I had asked for today off, I work as a hotel manager for the hotel five blocks from our current house; making for easy pick up from the school as the school is a block closer to our house than the hotel. Anyways, I smiled, and saw a blue note hanging on my purse. I raised an eyebrow and picked it up, following the leading string to the sink, where I saw dirty dishes with batter in them, then followed it to the fridge, where a pastel blue frosted cake stood, and it finally made sense as to why Dante was so tired this morning; he was up late baking. I walked up to him and kissed him on the cheek in a 'thank you' before handing the kids their backpacks and lunches and heading to work/school.

I smiled as they all got out of the car and waved, the three huddling as they walked towards their new school. I was kind of scared for all of them, especially Natalie, but shook it off and drove to work instead of being that one helicopter parent.
