As the soldiers tended to their wounds after the battle was finally over, their victory didn't feel quite like a triumph.
They had simply lost too many good people. Of their own, of their opponent's.
They had never even wanted this war to start. But there were people in higher places who didn't share that noble opinion, and since they owed those people their lives... They just threw those lives into a firing line for them.
One soldier started singing a mourning song, soon joined by their comrades. Before long, voices across the drenched battlefield answered them. The sorrow had birthed something pure.
A/N: This short is based very loosely on the Christmas Truce of 1914, so if it seems familiar to you, it's probably because it reminds you of a history class you once had.
