"What's the harm in being optimistic for once?", she mused aloud. He huffed indignantly. "It gets your hopes up. And hopes are a bad sign when they're up."
"And why is that?", she sighed.
"For one, it makes you lower your guard. It's a balance, you see. One goes up, the other goes down. But worst of all, it makes you have expectations. And everyone knows expectations are just objectively bad."
She stared at him for a while, pondering his answer. "You're a real ray of sunshine, aren't you?", she said at last.
"Thank you," he replied primly.
