"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Jacob. Happy birthday to you!" everyone clapped as he blew out the candles... Of four cakes. The whole pack was there, they got three to themselves, the other one was for me and the rest of the humans. No one who didn't know, not even Charlie, wondered about how those La Push kids could eat so much and stay so skinny and fit. It was just another part of life, like the fact that the Earth revolved around the sun, rain fell from the sky, La push kids could eat a whole cake each and not gain a single pound... Simple, everyday things like that. Leah's voice interrupted my musings. "Earth to Bella! I brought cake." I took it. "Thanks Leah." "Hey, what are best-friends for?" I laughed. That's when two arms lifted me out of the air and turned me around. Jacob gave me a big kiss, in front of everybody. I blushed, embarrassed. "Put me down?" "Maybe." "Pretty please?" "Maybe. For a kiss." I kissed him lightly. "Alright." He said, putting me down gently. "Thank you." I pulled a little box from my pocket and handed it to him. "Happy birthday," I said. "It's not much..." He kissed my hand. "I love it." He pulled the necklace out of the box. It was a thin silver chain, and on the end dangled a metal carving of the La Push pack symbol. He put it on, where it rested against his bare skin. Don't ask, the werewolves had boiling hot body temperatures, so they usually went shirtless. Just like the sky is blue and birds fly, La Push boys were shirtless.
After the party, I searched for Jacob. Instead, I found a note in his room. Bella, meet me in the forest. I headed to the forest, where he waited. "Come on, I want to show you something." I hesitated for a brief second before following him. He took my hand to guide me. We walked through the bushes and trees, on a non-existing path that I would never be able to remember. Suddenly, we broke into sunlight. I gasped, it was beautiful! We were in a perfectly round clearing, a crystal clear stream was bubbling happily through the middle. The lush grass was covered in flowers of all different kinds and colours, lilac purple, cardinal red, pale yellow... Vines grew on the trees, giving it an age-old look. "It's lovely!" "I found it years ago, the day you came back to Forks. I've always wanted to show you, but didn't have the right time or occasion." "I love it..." "And I you. I love you Bella." He kissed me softly, but then broke away. He pulled a box out of his pocket and got on his knee. "I love you. Will you, Isabella Swan, marry me?" He opened it, to reveal a beautiful glimmering diamond ring. It shimmered on the sun... like a vampire would. Like Edward would... Be happy. Whispered his voice. I blinked in surprise, it's been two years since I hallucinated or heard Edward. Be happy... I opened my lips to answer, when Jacob tensed. "Vampire!" He yelled, jumping up. Victoria? I wondered. It's been six months since her last attack. He turned into a wolf, shredding his clothes apart in the process. Hop on, his eyes seemed to say. I climbed on his back, gripping the soft fur of his neck between my fingers. He ran. And I mean ran. He was as fast as a vampire, maybe even faster, causing wind to whip at my face and my hair to stream behind us. We arrived at the reserve, where he must have called the pack with his mental voice-speaking thing, because they were all there. Leah, the only one in human form, came to us and helped me off. "Are you ok? What happened?" "We were... talking. Then he scented a vampire. So we ran here." "Vampire! All he told us was to meet you here, he said it was an emergency." "I have to go home! Someone has to protect Charlie!" She nodded. "Alright. Me and Jacob will come in with you. The rest of the pack will stay nearby." I went over to Jacob. "I need to get my truck. Charlie will wonder if I don't have it." "He says that Charlie should be used to you appearing out of nowhere with no ride by now. But Embry just volunteered to get it." I tossed the keys, which he caught in midair with his mouth. "Showoff." Muttered Leah. I climbed on Jacob again, grabbed on and felt wind rush through my hair once more. I arrived at Charlie's house. It was kind of sad that a twenty year old woman still lived with her father, but I couldn't afford college or to move out. We walked in to find Charlie and Billy watching TV in the living room. "Hey Charley, hey Billy." "Bells! I thought you'd be out tonight." He looked at Jacob. I blushed, he thought we were doing that? Little did he know, I was still a virgin. Another embarrassing fact, but Jacob was kinda old fashioned and wouldn't do that unless we were married. Which he obviously wanted. Leah probably made it look like we weren't doing anything tonight, which we weren't, but it was still embarrassing. "We'll all be upstairs." We stayed true to our word and ended up in my room. Jacob stood at the window and Leah the door. "So, what are we going to do?" "We'll have to set up patrols again, unless she moved somewhere..." His look made it obvious were he wanted me to move. "But what about Charlie? It'd be easier if Bella were here." God, I never realized how much of a lifesaver Leah was. They started debating when Charlie's voice interrupted. "Bella! Guest!" I went down the stairs, one step at a time, Leah behind me, but froze at the bottom step. You could see the front door from there, and I was paralysed with fear. Standing in the frame of the open door, with Charlie standing right beside, was the vampire. The one Jacob must have smelled in the clearing. "Hello Bella." I wanted to run away from the vampire. Leah snarled and moved protectively in front of me. I clutched Jacob. Fear turning my knuckles white. A truck pulled in the drive, Embry was here. He got out and snarled, but smiled. We got the bloodsucker surrounded, said the smile. I stared in horror and finally managed a whisper, a faint sound in the air that was almost inaudible. But that the vampire could here. Only that one single word. "Edward..."
