"Did he actually just tell his mom to speak to me about the crush he has on me?"
"Yeah, I think he did. Maybe you should consider actually going?"
I whirl around to face my best friend, my expression one of pure perplex. "Did you . . . did you just suggest what I think you just suggested?"
Caitlyn Niall widens her eyes, batting them innocently at me. "What? I just think that maybe you should check out what he wants." She shakes her head, her eyes straying to the table in front of us, "I mean . . . his mom is the principal, after all. You never know what could happen."
I let out a huff of disbelief. "Well, sorry for thinking that you'd have my back on this."
"Sorry, Mia. I'm just saying. Although it was a bit weird, I mean who tells their mom to speak to their crush about the crush? Especially, if your mom is the principal. Uh, hello?"
I don't look up from my phone, from where I am scrolling through my contacts. It's Friday afternoon and Caitlyn and I are at the mall, after I'd skipped school this morning on the excuse that I was sick. I've let my thoughts wander to unknown streets and I still can't figure out what Kade Lawson's intentions were when he asked his mom to speak to me. I'm thinking of maybe calling him up, or sending him a text, but his name isn't listed in my contacts.
Caitlyn is looking over my shoulder, and I sigh, looking at the line of people waiting by the entrance of our favorite clothes store. I'm about to give up looking for Kade's number, when Caitlyn suggests that I search him up on my Instagram.
I quickly exit my contacts, and open up Instagram. After typing in the name "Kade", I wait for the results to come up. I'd overheard a junior in the bathroom speak about how Kade only went by his first name on social media, so I don't bother putting in his last name.
A list of Kade's come up on my phone screen, and I shake my head in hopelessness at Caitlyn. "It's not going to work. How are we even going to find-"
"There we go!" Caitlyn grabs my phone from my hands and taps onto the profile of the first Kade, and I smile at her gratefully as I quickly skim over the bio. My eyes latch onto something about soccer and boxing, but before I can read it properly, someone nudges me from behind. I turn around, apologizing as I realize the line of the store is much less now and Caitlyn and I have been holding it up, as a result of being so engrossed in my phone.
I move to the side, quickly firing off a DM to Kade.
"Wtf?"
