I pout to no one but myself, sitting in the middle of Caitlyn's bed in her bedroom, where we're getting ready for a party. Yes, you heard right, a party. Mia Lynch doesn't go to these, right?

Wrong. Apparently now I do. By force.

Caitlyn walks out of her closet wearing a neon yellow dress that reaches her thighs, and twirls around. I groan, "You look like a highlighter. Literally."

Caitlyn lets out a heavy sigh, disappearing back into her closet, where she comes back out a minute later wearing a different dress.

She sits on the edge of the bed, "Really, Mia. You're better than this. Skipping a lit party because of a boy? Or two, I suppose."

"Boys? No. Please." I scoff, but Caitlyn sees right through my act.

"Look here, Mia. You do need to break things off with Kade Lawson anyways, don't you? So go do it." She grins, a glint in her eye, "And it's pretty obvious that you're taken with this other Kade dude. He'll probably be there too. Make your move, sweetie."

I roll my eyes, knowing that she won't get it. Kade Ryder, the boy I've been talking to, being the same street fighter with the stunning looks and intriguing eyes . . . It's just not something I'd expected at all.

Him being the captain of our rival soccer team adds to that even more. There's no chance that Kade Lawson would be okay with it when I simply end things, is there? Especially if anything happens between Kade Ryder and I.

I sigh. What have I gotten myself into?

. . .

Dancing bodies fill every corner of this random kids house that's being used for a high school party, loud music reverberating through the walls. I follow Caitlyn through the entrance, the lounge, until we reach the kitchen. I take a deep breath, letting myself breathe for a second, but it doesn't last long.

Before I know it, Kade Lawson is at my elbow, his breath hot on the back of my neck. "Mia. Babe?"

I jerk out of my reverie by his tone of voice, and the fact that he just called me babe. I step away from him subtly, turning around to face him. My eyes pass over his features and I realize that he's drunk.

It's barely even ten.

Kade's eyes are ringed with red, his pupils unfocused. He hangs onto my arm like a lost puppy,  and I realize with a sinking feeling that he took the defeat of the match real bad, much worse than I thought. I feel guilty, because I'd left the match before it even began.

I was supposed to be there supporting Kade, and Greytown High, and instead I'd left. No wonder he's in this state.

There's a voice in my head that tells me that there's no way that I can end things with him tonight, not when he's already like this. Not when he's drunk. I need to do it when he's sober, because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I took advantage of him in this vulnerable state.

I hold onto Kade's arm, deciding that letting him rest in one of these bedrooms somewhere is the best choice. I roll my eyes with disgust a hundred times before I finally find a bedroom that isn't occupied. Kade mumbles, half asleep already, and I gently unwrap his arm from around my waist. He falls onto the bed, passed out, and I sigh, turning around and leaving the room.

I walk around the party for a few minutes, unable to find anyone I actually know. Finding the lounge of the mansion, I walk inside, and all eyes immediately swivel to me.

A girl I swear I've never met before jumps up, stalking over to me. She has brown hair, wavy, down till her shoulders, and pretty blue eyes. She wraps fingers around my arm, her eyes glinting in the harsh lighting, "So, how is he?"

"Who?" I ask, looking around myself, perplexed. I can't see much familiar faces, but all these teens are looking at me as if they know me.

"Kade, obviously. Lawson!"

"Uh, he passed out." I say, still not knowing what's going on.

"As if that's all that happened! You naughty lil-"

I furrow my eyebrows, confused. The voices around me get louder and I turn around on my heel, my quite-rare claustrophobia showing up again.

I rush through the crowd, through the music, until I find myself upstairs. I spot an empty bedroom with a balcony, and letting out a breath of relief, I head to the balcony. I need to breathe, get some air.

Only once I step into the balcony, I realize that I'm not alone. Kade Ryder turns around, his stunning features taking my breath away yet again.

He's even prettier up close.
