Calum
We were doing this hour long interview talking about the start of the band walking around with cameras on us. Mainly because we were in Italy at Gia's hometown, Salerno , visiting before our show tomorrow.
We were all casually dressed and Gia lead the way.
"I grew up here, I think people forgets that I'm not Australian at all. All I did was fish, learn about the family business and stuff like that because my dad has a business in the inner city. Everyday after my classes, I'd sit outside the restaurant with my guitar and just play songs. Practice all day to show the customers what I learned" she explained. "After a while like 2011 I was about 13, I was putting together little songs and riffs, then someone put up a video of me on Facebook and that's when they came along."
We walked through these stone ally ways with Italian graffiti all over. Gia didn't want to show exactly where because everyone would come out here turning it into an attraction.
"So our mum's knew we were taking this band stuff serious around this time uploading videos and having band practice, then Ashton's mum showed us the video of Gia playing" Luke said.
We chuckled "Just like that, we knew we needed her in the band, we tracked her down tell her to come out to hang and have a jam session. Play a 200 person show."
"And only 12 came, so they tricked me" she chuckled.
We all looked at each other and smiled "It was a long process after that show her dad wanted to kill us because we conned them into coming. So when it came to next time it was about two months."
"We had to skype like everyday for practice, which was hard especially when you didn't know English" Ashton added.
"When I would visit, it was for about two weeks then I would fly back home. In that time we'd play shows or at parks, do some videos too. I started studying English, learning songs and everything, so for a while it was just playing guitar" she explained.
We stopped at this pond area with a family of ducks going in circles. "Then it started to kick off at the beginning of 2012 from there meeting writers and managers who wanted to work with us, at this point we were 14-16 years old. Our parents didn't want us to go too fast so we were doing things on our own playing anywhere we can and doing streams whenever possible, connecting with fans. Then did small tours as a supporting act."
I looked at Gia giving her a soft smile and she just nodded looking down "Then we signed with this manager and started writing, and released our first EP and moved out to London at the end of 2012. It was really hard, but Luke's mom came along with my cousin so he could help me with English."
"We started writing and working in the studio for our first album, it was about a two year process from when we first started writing with the first EP. Then toured with One direction. While we were off the one direction tour between legs, we did a tour in Australia and one in Italy. Came out to LA for a while doing videos and stuff, did our own little headlining tour, in 2014 we released our album and everything is history. Right about that time of the album release Gia was getting good at English" Ashton said wrapping up the story of the start.
We all just sat there nodding slowly "Wow... I was 13 when I first came out to Australia... I'm about 21..." Gia said out loud confused.
We all sat there and stared at each other confused "It doesn't feel that long..."
"I've definitely felt it, I feel old" Gia mumbled. "The craziest part is that we're all friends, all of this is so genuine. We get in arguments, have moments, and love each other. The part that sucks is that people don't see that we are friends, I don't think any of this would still be a thing if we weren't best friends."
