"On your mark, get set, go!" I say loudly as I flick a ping pong ball across the floor. Kit Kat takes off running after it. I lay on my stomach, watching her. She reaches the ball and attacks it with her paws. I laugh at how cute she is.
I recently discovered that cats like to chase objects that move. So here I am, on a Thursday morning, laying on my kitchen floor and throwing things for Kit Kat to chase. She never brings them back like a dog would, but watching her chase them is cute enough.
I flick another ping pong ball and Kit Kat changes direction to chase it instead. On the floor beside me, my phone vibrates for the tenth time. I grab and go through the texts. All of them are from either Cody or Trey, telling I'm late for school and to hurry up. I sigh, pushing myself up from the floor.
"Looks like I got to go. I'll see you after school, Kit Kat," I grab my bag and walk out the door.
If I hurry I can make it in time for second period. I speed walk to school and make it just in time. I slide into my seat next to Trey just as the bell rings. Before he can ask me any questions the teacher starts to talk.
He slides a piece of paper toward me. I take it in my own hands, unfolding it.
Why are you late?
Taking out my own pen, I write a quick message back.
I was playing with Kit Kat. Didn't want to come.
I slide the paper over to his desk. He looks at me for a moment, almost like he's trying to decide something and then starts to write. He stops and erases something, then continues to write. He does this a couple times.
I'm so curious as to what he's writing it's not even funny. After a good two minutes I watch him fold the piece of paper. Suddenly, I'm nervous. I have this feeling that whatever the note says is going to be serious. Good or bad, I'm not sure.
He slides the note on the desk, toward me. I go to reach for it but before I can grab it a hand slaps down, covering it. I glance up to see our teacher glaring at the two of us. My heart sinks, I know there is not chance we're going to get that note back. Which means I won't be able to see what he wrote. The teacher picks up the note.
"Maybe I should read this out to everyone?" he asks us. Trey's eyes widen as he shakes his head. I join in with my own head shaking. I didn't have to read it to know it's not meant for anyone else to hear. The teacher unfolds the note, scanning the paper. He smirks and shoves it into his pocket.
"No passing notes in my class." he grumbles. He continues on with the lesson, keeping an eye on Trey and I. We don't dare talk. We would just end up getting detention, and I would rather not get it.
Through out the class my eyes keep drifting to the clock. I swear its getting slower and slower. My glances turn into a mean glare. Why can't the end of class just hurry up? I can't even focus on the lesson. My head is filled with thoughts of what the note could have said. My brain just won't shut up.
The bell rings, snapping me out of my thoughts. I shove my stuff into my bag and slowly stand up. Trey and I walk out of the room together.
"So, what did the note say?" I ask casually, like it's no big deal. But it kind of is. I'm dying to know what he wrote. I just feel like it's going to be important. We stop in front of my next class.
"I was just wondering if we could talk after school today, just you and me," he say, eyes glued to the ground. For a few seconds I forget how to breathe. Be calm, I tell myself.
"Yeah, sure," I smile. He smiles back and butterflies attack my stomach.
"Cool. Well , I'll see you later," he turns and walks down the hall to his next class. I walk into mine and slide into my desk. Sally sits in the desk next to me. She gives me a weird look. I probably deserve it. I have the goofiest smile on my face right now.
