I hold my roasting stick just above the flames so I won't burn my marshmallow. I watch it closely. No way will I ruin this one. I had already burnt six of them. I slowly turn it over to even out all the sides.
"Katie?" I glance at Trey.
"Yeah?" I ask. He smiles and nods toward the fire.
"Your Marshmallow is on fire," he smirks. I stare in horror at the ball of flame at the end of my stick. I let out a small scream before bringing it close to my face to blow it out. Cody and Trey both laugh.
"That was not funny," I say, glaring at Trey.
"Sure it was, babe." he says. For a second my heart freezes. It's been so long since he called me that. I never even realized how much I missed it. My mind blanks and I can't think of a comeback.
"Jerk," I mutter. He chuckles. We're silent for a few minnutes until Cody breaks it.
"I don't want this year to end."
"I don't want to be seperated from you guys," I say, softly.
"No fair, you guys took the good two," Trey pouts. "I don't want to go to a different school then you guys."
I stare into the fire. I can't picture my life without these two idiots. I poke a log with my stick. If I could freeze time right now, I would. I don't want anything to change.
"I'd freeze time too," Cody whispers. Trey agree's by nodding.
"I said that out loud?" I ask.
"Yup," Cody say's. popping the 'p'. I sigh, shaking my head. Suddenly I remember a campfire song I learned in school when I was little.
Way down south where bananas grow
A flea stepped on a elephant's toe
The elephant cried with tears in his eyes
"Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
I sing, loudly, earning weird looks from the boys. I giggle at their expressions. I can't believe I even remembered it but I see the reconization on their faces. I know they remember too.
"Come on, sing along." I continue with the chorus. They join me.
Boom, Boom, ain't it great to be Crazy?
Boom, Boom, ain't it great to be Crazy?
Giddy and Foolish all day long
Boom, Boom, ain't it great to be Crazy!
Way up north where there's ice and snow
There was a penguin and his name was Joe
He got tired of black and white
So he wore pink slacks to the dance last night!
I smile as we sing the song. It's grade like grade three all over again. My smile widens as I recall the memory. My teacher had decided to have our class sleepover in the school gym.
I laugh as we sit around a fake campfire in the middle of the gym. We're singing this weird song called 'Boom boom, ain't it great to be crazy?'. Once we finish the song our teacher, Mrs. Hale, stands up.
"Okay, you can go lay out your sleeping bags and get ready for bed," she announces. I walk to the girls side of the gym, leaving Trey and Cody so they can go to the boys side. I unfold my sleeping bag next to a girl named Jenny.
After ten minutes Mrs.Hale turns out the gym lights and everyone goes to sleep. Except for me. I lay here, staring at the ceiling, waiting. Waiting for what exactly? To move spots.
After a good fifteen minutes of silence I slip out of my sleeping bag. I tip-toe across the gym to the boys side. I locate Trey and Cody sleeping next to each other. I poke Trey on his cheek and he moves over in his sleeping. I slide in next to him.
"Hey," he whispers.
"Hey," I whisper back.
That had to be one of my favorite memories. I mean, I don't remember everything from my childhood but that memory stands out to me for some reason. I pull my knees up to my chest and rest my head on them.
"You guys are the best," I whisper.
"Trust me, we know," Trey smirks.
"This is the part where you're supposed to say I'm the best too, not be a concided jerk." I laugh. I stare at him but he doesn't make a move to say anything, just stares back at me with a blank expression.
"Katie, you're the best," Cody laughs.
"I know," I say in a deeper voice to mock Trey.
"Oh, shush," Trey grins. We start talking about anything and everything. I couldn't have asked for a better time.
Around midnight we put out the fire and we say our goodbyes. Trey promises to call us both tomorrow. I make my way back into my house and into my room. I change into my pajama's and stand in front of my mirror, brushing my hair. I pull it through slowly, staring at my reflection.
I stare into my eyes in the reflection. Would my dad be proud of me?
I shake my head and crawl into my bed, pulling the blankets tight around me.
I can't wait for tomorrow. I know what I'm going to do. It's been a long time coming, that's for sure. I roll onto my stomach, closing my eyes.
Get ready to meet your daughter, dad.
I hate this chapter. It's short and just not good at all. I knew what I was going to write but it turned out WAY shorter then I wanted it to be. So, I am sorry for it's lenght :/ BUT to make up for it, Chapter 15 will be posted tuesday or wednesday! :D Hopefully Tuesday but with school in the way I can't promise anything.
