Tyson fell to his knees in pain. It looked like he wanted to lie down but he was forced up. I wanted to run over to him and hold him but I knew I couldn't. He cried out and hung his head, tears starting to stream down his face, silently crying.
"Emma!" I whispered urgently. Emma rolled her eyes and started to chant.
"Liberia intus lupi accipe sacrificium," she closed her eyes and chanted slowly while my eyes stayed glued to Tyson. I couldn't take it any more, I stepped forward just as the pentagram burst into flames, the ingredients slowly moving inside the flames towards Tyson. The smoke rose around us and I couldn't see anything. Something tapped my shoulder.
"Ava!" the voice said.
"Emma?"I asked, trying to see past the smoke that was stinging my eyes and clogging my lungs, "Is that you?"
"Finish it, Ava" she said, grabbing my arm and pulling me somewhere. The smoke cleared up and I could suddenly see everything again, Tyson was still in the pentagram, head down. A thick cloud of smoke rose behind him, like a monster waiting to consume its prey. I swear I could see eyes.
I sucked in a sharp breath as I looked behind me to find more smoke, Emma gone. This needed to be finished, I started towards the pentagram, the flames opening up as I took a step through. I walked to the center and words came out of my mouth without me telling them to, "sacrificium simul miscere sanguine hoc accipe," I threw my arms in the air and chanted more rapidly, the air filling with the coppery smell of blood.
The smoke began to fade and what used to be the row of ingredients was now a small brown bowl, deep markings cut into the sides. I stepped out of the circle and yelled, "Drink, Tyson!" his head shot up and met my eyes and then he slowly turned around, staring at the bowl. He looked back at me and yelled something, but I didn't hear it, instead I just shook my head yes. His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed and crawled to the bowl, picking it up gently and lifting it to his lips.
I started when I saw a flash of red and Tyson looked like he choked but he kept drinking, until the bowl was nothing but a bowl anymore. He turned around and looked at me, his eyes glowing a deep blood red. I thought, it must have worked but he turned away from me.
The world faded around me. All I could see was Tyson Tyson falling to the ground and going still. I could see the Tyson as he was now and I could see the Tyson when he was about ten. I could suddenly hear his heartbeat, a slow patter until it faded away completely. All I thought was no, this isn't right, something's wrong. I felt like screaming but the scream didn't come.
And then it did.
I could hear myself scream as if from a distance, a blood curdling scream. I could feel myself lift my hands as if they weren't my own.
And then I felt the shock of electricity snake through my arms, my legs, my mind. It felt as if I had fire in my veins instead of blood. When I closed my eyes I saw flashes, of pictures, writing. They were written on walls like the inside of a caves - they were written in blood. They were in a different language but suddenly I knew it as if I spoke it daily - Latin. When I read it out loud my voice echoed off the trees around us, "enite ad me redeo mea super me vocare ad te"
Emma
Emma watched as Tyson hit the ground and she watched as Ava's expression changed from sadness to rage. She watched as Ava lifter her arms and the wind picked up, blowing Emma's hair around her. Then she realized why Tyson did not complete the transformation. The faerie drink.
She thought it looked different when she entered the field. The small sparkles that floated inside of it were gone but she didn't think anything of it. She thought it was because it was away from faerie land. Emma was wrong.
