Wanda and I hurried down the stairs.
"What was that?" she asked.
"Tying him up?" I questioned.
She nodded.
I shrugged. "Gotta make it look believable. Don't want him getting in any trouble."
"Good point," she said as we continued down the stairs.
Soon, the sound of many footsteps and voices greeted us.
I stole a quick glance over the side of the stairs.
At least forty men with big guns were running up the stairs.
I pulled my head back swiftly and turned to Wanda.
We slowed down slightly.
"They're spread out and can only take us a few at a time," I said. "As long as we-"
There were footsteps and voices from above too.
I swore quietly and Wanda bit her lip.
"Back to back," she said.
I nodded and we stood on the landing together and waited.
We didn't have to wait long.
"There they are!" one man shouted, aiming his gun at us.
Wanda and I dove into fighting.
I faced upstairs, which did give them the upper hand, but I was prepared.
I made shields over my forearms out of titanium, which was a bit more difficult than I was used to, and used them to not only defend myself but whack them too.
Tony was right, the gloves did make using my powers far easier, but I was still getting tired, especially since I wasn't fully healed yet.
I pressed the buttons on my fingers and aimed a blaster at one of the men.
My arm jerked back slightly as a blast of energy smacked into his shoulder, knocking him back into another man.
One man came right at me, with a flying fist, so I grabbed it and used his momentum against him, pulling him over my head and using my foot to kick him over. "Incoming!" I shouted at Wanda who used his falling body to knock more people over.
After a while, the piles of unconscious bodies grew and both Wanda and I got more tired.
The soldiers kept on coming, a non-stop flood of angry men in body armour with big guns.
It was a miracle we hadn't been overrun yet.
"Big blast in five?" Wanda panted out as there seemed to be no more coming, just the ten or so on each side already there.
"Four," I agreed.
"Three."
"Two."
"One!"
We both blasted outwards with our powers, a wave of dirt overcoming my side and tendrils of scarlet energy throwing Wanda's side into a wall.
We caught our breath for a split second before we nodded at each other and began running down the stairs again, taking them two at a time.
It wasn't long before we reached the middle of the building, where an open elevator was waiting for us.
Wanda and I exchanged wary and tired glances.
"FRIDAY, is it safe?" I asked the AI.
"Senator Ross has already left, but it is unsafe to go down any further, as there is military on every level below this one," it replied.
