Why couldn't things go right for him just once?
Mean was frustrated.
It had all looked so good at first. On his way to the pool house he had remembered Tio's words again, about letting Plan come to him and he had decided to act as if he innocently wanted to swim in the pool, nothing more.
He had been excited to find out that Plan had been hiding in the changing room and he even sneakily buried Plan's shirt under his own clothes, knowing he would probably try to get back to his room and Mean could see him shirtless again.
After all, the maids shouldn't be the only ones who could enjoy that view.
And just when he had had Plan where he had wanted him – with him in the pool – his meddling sister had interfered.
He had no idea what Joule's agenda was at the moment. It looked like she was trying to seduce Plan and Mean was worried.
Joule was a bit of a loose cannon.
She had talked their parents into allowing her to take time off from studying to prepare her application to fashion design schools in Paris. But Mean sometimes wondered if she actually did that, or just tried to make a career out of being an influencer.
She also had many dating rumours flying around about her. Like every member of their family, she was mindful of her public image and she never actually got caught with anyone – but in private, Mean knew the rumours had substance and that Joule truly was a flirt.
Thus, he valiantly attempted to protect Plan from her more or less subtle advances before it was too late.
"Let's take a picture together for my Instagram!" she suggested, after she had unsuccessfully tried to get closer to Plan, who seemed eager to avoid her – but also not motivated to leave the pool anymore.
Which gave Mean hope.
"Can we not?" Plan protested.
Mean agreed with him.
"Drop it, Joules. He doesn't like being put on the spot."
"Ohhh... but we would look so cute together! I'm sure a lot of people would ship us!"
Mean immediately turned to Plan, to find him confused and obviously uncomfortable.
"Ship... where?"
Joule laughed.
"Awww, you're such an innocent cutie!" she seemed to either not notice Plan's efforts to keep away from her or ignore them on purpose. "Shipping means, people would want to see us together in a relationship."
She tried to get between Mean and Plan again, now holding her phone ready to take a selfie as soon as she had convinced the others.
"I don't want to be in a relationship with you," Plan said with a somewhat resigned calm.
"Why not? It doesn't have to be real. Just a few rumours could get both of us a lot of traction."
"Leave it, Joule. He said no."
Mean sometimes really didn't get his sister. Joule and him were somewhat close, being the two youngest siblings, the ones allowed to be unreasonable by their parents. But Joule just... overdid it sometimes, okay... most of the time.
And while Mean still tried to find ways to keep his sister in check, a visibly annoyed Plan suddenly stepped up.
"I don't want to be famous. I don't want any rumours," he said with seething anger, "and I'm not interested in girls."
