5) Rebirth

"What's going on up there?" I shout into my intercom, avoiding falling rocks.

"We've got a bit of a problem, but you focus on what you're doing down there," Shiro told me.

"What kind of problem?"

Shiro sighed. "We're coming down"

Shiro, Hunk and Keith all came down in their Lions, running up to me and the Balmerans I was standing with.

"What's going on?" Rax asked.

"There's a monster up there that Zarkon sent to destroy us," Keith said.

"A monster? Will Zarkon's savagery never abate? Perhaps our people were never meant to be free," Shay sighed.

"Shay, don't give up. Zarkon's power grows every planet he conquers, but he's weakened by every being that fights back," Hunk told her.

"Fight back? Against a monster like that? How?"

"I don't know but we can beat it. Tell her, Keith"

"Can we?" Keith asked.

"Yes, we can! This is our first mission and we're not going to fail. We can beat it. We just need some time to come up with a plan," Shiro said.

The Balmera shook, cracks opening up in the grounds, a faint moaning sound floating through the air around us.

"That great noise comes from the Balmera itself. Our home crumbles beneath our feet. The Balmera is dying," Rax explained.

They contacted Allura and Coran, trying to figure out what to do. Since the Balmera was dying, all they could think of was getting the Balmerans to safety before the planet collapsed in on itself.

"How on Earth do you plan on landing the Castle with that monster thingy on the surface?" Hunk asked.

"You'll need a distraction," Pidge said.

"I've got an idea. If you can get me to one of the stations, like the one you attacked earlier, I might be able to hack in and have it target the monster," I said.

Shiro nodded. "We'll engage it in our lions as well, lure it over to the station. With it distracted, Allura and Coran will land the Castle and load all of the citizens"

"Or we could load Balmerans into our Lions few at a time and shuttle them to the ship. You know, no engaging ferocious laser-eye guy. How long would that take?" Lance butt in.

"Days? Weeks?" Coran answered.

"We only have hours," Keith said.

"Look, we don't need to beat this thing. We just need to bait it away from the ship. Provoke and evade," Shiro said.

"Okay, here's the thing. I'm worried that we're going to be really, really good at the provoking part, and then like really bad at the evading part," Hunk said. "But if this is what it takes to save Shay and everyone on the planet, then I'm in"

"Can you contact the other Balmerans?" Keith asked them.

"I can, but I know not what they'll say. Leave the planet? Our home?" Shay asked.

"It's the only option. I'm coming down," Allura said.

"You're coming down? That thing will spot your pod and blow it to pieces," Pidge said.

"Let me worry about that, you just focus on keeping the creature distracted"

Shiro dropped me off at the nearest station, the one closest to the monster, then flew off with the others. I ran into the abandoned control room, working as fast as I could. Most of the guns were down but those that weren't completely destroyed I got back online.
