Conan's POV:
As soon as Gavin leaves with his brother, his mother, Emma, starts talking to me once again. She was a very polite woman and I can tell why Gavin loves her so much, besides the point of her being his mother.
I couldn't get him out of my head though. The warmth of just his hands was extremely comforting. My software instability went up again as soon as our skin touched. Why?
"Conan? Are you there?" Emma breaks away my thoughts.
"Apologies, Ms.Reed, I was doing a software update. What were you saying?"
"Ah, I was just saying thank you for taking care of my son. I know how difficult he is," she replies, understanding my android needs.
"It's no problem at all. He's actually not as bad as everyone warned me about. I think he just needed the push of knowing people do care for him and he shouldn't shut everyone out. When I met him, I told him. He fixed his attitude and now, it's only been maybe twice that he's gotten angry with me. He's made a lot of progress and it's only been maybe three days," I explain, not realizing how human I sounded.
The woman stares at me in disbelief but quickly fixes her posture, "that's amazing, Conan. I'm glad he got partnered with you rather than anyone else. I don't think anyone else would be able to put up with him. He's only been like that with me once but he apologized afterward. That boy would've been ten feet under if he had said one more word. But I really do appreciate the kindness you've shown him. By the way, are you a deviant?"
There's the question I've been waiting for. It's odd but, I can think for myself. I'm not deviant. I still follow orders. The only possible ways to turn deviant are being 'born' that way or making the choice to disobey orders. I've gone through neither.
"No, I'm not," I respond, although earlier seemed like I was an actual human. Especially with how much emotion I had in my voice.
"Really?" She seemed surprised. "I would've thought... never mind."
"I understand, Ms.Reed, it does seem like that. Please don't mention this to Gavin but I can think for myself. I can feel emotions. I can do everything myself. I just haven't reached that point where I have to disobey an order to actually go through the process of turning."
"Emotions? What kinds of emotions?" She questions, a suspecting tone in her voice.
I laugh, "annoyance. Happiness. Disappointment. Worry."
"Happiness?"
"I do enjoy my time with Gavin. He's showed me things that I probably would've never seen in my lifetime. I'm... happy that he's accepted me into his life," I say, my thirium pump faltering at the thought of him.
She stays silent, a small, knowing smile on her face. I give her a questioning look but she responds with shaking her head.
"Nothing. I'm just happy that you guys are getting along. It's not every day that Gavin brings a friend home for me to meet. I know he came to see his brother but he wouldn't usually bring someone alone."
"Yes, I offered to stay at his apartment while he came over here but he insisted on me going."
"Oh, he did?" She raises a brow and I nod. "Conan, are you sure you haven't felt anything... weird, towards Gavin? Something more than just... happiness?"
My eyes widen at the question. Something more than happiness? "What do you mean by that?" I question, my body starting to feel weird.
"Ah, you'll find out soon enough. It's nothing. Would you like to see Gavin's old room? He was an angsty teen, I'm sure it'll give you a good laugh," she smoothly transitions the conversation that even I don't see it coming.
I chuckle, "that would be nice. Maybe I can find something that I can tease him about. His reactions are incredibly hilarious."
"Oh, trust me, you'll find something."
