NOPI Chapter 50
Sephine's POV
Napatingin ako sa pinto ng bigla itong bumukas.
Nang makita ko si Charles ay naglakad na ako papunta sakanya.
"Tsk, tsk. Hindi ba uso ang kumatok sa pintuan bago pumasok sa inyong magbabarkada?" tanong ko dahilan kung bakit siya natawa at napasuklay sa buhok niya kaya naman napatitig ako sakanya
Nang tanggalin niya ang coat niya ay napa-purse na ako ng lips ko at hindi na sinubukang magsalita pa. Tinaas niya na ang kamay niya't pinaluwangan ang neck tie niya saka tinanggal ang dalawang botones ng polo niya.
He was moving gracefully and handsomely in a non-hurried and patient way. Seriously, napaka-gwapo niya to the point na mapapaisip ka na napaka-unfair ng mundo dahil ibinigay na sakanya ang lahat.
Napatingin naman siya saka akin bigla dahilan kung bakit ako natauhan at namula. He caught me staring at him. So embarrassing.
"Haha. You can stare all you want. It's exclusively yours" sagot niya kaya naman napaiwas na ako ng tingin ko
Unconsciously ay napatingin ako ulit sa family picture nila at sa babaeng kamukha ni Charles dun. Is she really his sister? How come I haven't heard about her? Is she overseas?
Nang maramdaman ko namang hawakan niya ang kamay ko ay napabaling na ang tingin ko sakanya.. only to see him much closer. I noticed that he really seemed.. really tired and uncomfortable.
My heart ached just by looking at him.
"Kung pagod ka, magpahinga ka muna" sabi ko't agad na siyang hinila at pinaupo sa napakalambot niyang sofa
Nang makaupo na siya ay kumuha ako ng baso ng tubig sa may stool ng kwarto niya saka umupo na sa tabi niya't pinainom na siya.
After drinking, I took the glass and put it in the table. After non ay tinignan ko na siya.
"Thanks, Seph. You're really the best," bulong niya saka niya inintertwine ang mga kamay nami't pumatong sa sofa at pumikit na
"You really can't handle these kind of stuff? You're already 20, I bet you've been into so many social parties" sabi ko't tumango naman siya
"It was fine back then, but now, whenever I attend these kind of parties, I can't handle it because I'll only remember my sister" sagot niya kaya naman napatingin na ako sakanya
Hindi ako nagsalita at agad na tinignan 'yung picture frame.
Why did he look so sad just by mentioning his sister?
"Yes, that girl in photo who's taller than me is my older sister. Her name is Charlene" pagkasabi non si Charles ay napatingin na ako sakanya at nakita nalang na nakamulat na ang mga mata niya
"She's beautiful. Let me guess. She's probably older than us. Hmm. 3-5 years older?" tanong ko kaya naman napangiti siya saka tumango
"So where is she? It's her brother's birthday today, right?" tanong ko
"She's.. She left and won't be coming back anymore," pagkarinig ko non ay nagulat ako
"What do you mean?"
"She died. When I was 10 years old" pagkasabi niya non ay napanganga na ako
Oh my god. I don't know what to say.
"We were caught up in an accident that led us to a cliff leading to the sea. My sister miraculously saved me with all the strength that she had left but because her heart was relatively weak ever since she was young, she suffered an attack and when we were rushed to the hospital, it was already too late," when I heard his soft and low voice it was as if a dam had suddenly broken.
My tears began to fall endlessly.
Losing a loved one.. I can't imagine it. It must hurt a lot. Specially if that someone saved you in the process of dying and that someone died instead.
Napasarado ako ng kamao ko nang makita kong kumunot ang noo niya na tila bang meron siyang naalala na hindi kaaya aya.
Isinara ko na ang bibig ko't pinigilan na magsalita.
Nang tumingin siya sa akin ay nabigla siya't agad na ngumiti. He pulled me into his embrace, wrapping his arms tightly around me.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for making you remember. I thought she was studying abroad or something" bulong ko dahilan kung bakit niya ako niyakap pabalik at natawa
"It's fine. It's been more than a decade already. I've moved on. I just miss her every now and then, that's all" sagot niya at kumalas na kami't nagkatinginan nalang
Iniabot niya ang kamay niya't pinunasan ang mga luha sa pisngi ko.
"Although it's a sad story, the ending's still okay" sagot niya kaya naman napa-sniff na ako't pinigilan nang umiyak at nakinig na sakanya
"Because of that, I became mature and well, became more responsible. I trained, studied, and did all I possibly can to be more knowledgeable about trading, business, marketing and everything related in this industry. That's why at the age of 18, when my parents gave me their acknowledgment, I was given the opportunity to handle a subsidiary of the company" dagdag niya kaya naman napangiti na ako
"I see. You've been through a lot" sagot ko pero umiling na siya kaagad
"I believe it's still not enough. I still have to work hard. For my sake, my parent's sake, my friends' sake, for my sister's sake and now, also for your sake"
Pinatong ko na ang ulo ko sa balikat niya at ang ulot niya nama'y ipinatong niya sa ulo ko.
"I want to visit her grave someday," sabi ko't nag-flinch siya
Mukhang nagulat siya't hindi inaasahan ang sinabi ko.
"Hmm? Why is that?" tanong niya kaya naman napangiti na ako
"I want to thank her for saving you and for being the best sister in the world. I wouldn't be so lucky to have met you if it wasn't for her"
