Chapter -26 Play Pretend

Things didn't remain the same as ever. At least not between Tapasya and Ruhaan. After the whole 'Hospital' incident, Ruhaan started ignoring Tapasya completely. Whoever got to know about the feud, termed Ruhaan's behavior towards Tapasya as weird.They thought that he overreacted. That it was not that big of a deal.

It might not have been a big of a deal for everyone else, but it was a great deal for Ruhaan. And Tapasya knew the reason behind that very well.

On the other hand, Mitali was blaming herself for this feud. She felt bad for Tapasya. So she thought of confronting Ruhaan. It was true that she was upset with Tapasya. But she also understood her point of view as well. Her intentions weren't bad either.

She found Ruhaan sitting all by himself. But before she could go up to him, a familiar voice made it's way to her ears.

Voice: Ruhaan!

Ruhaan looked up. An ever eccentric Akriti Goel, made her way towards him. 

Akriti: Can I sit here?

Ruhaan: Yeah.....sure.

Mitali hid behind the door to listen to their conversation.

Akriti sat beside Ruhaan and placed her hand on top his coyly. Mitali's eyes widened seeing that.

Akriti: Listen,.........I heard about what happened between you and Tapasya..........and I think what you did was absolutely right. She shouldn't have lied to you. 

Ruhaan kept silent.

Akriti: Whatever the reason was, she shouldn't have lied to you that way. I know how much you hate lies. I mean, what was she thinking? She knows that you hate people who lie . But she still lied.

Ruhaan: Akriti , I......

Akriti: Listen, if you ever need anybody to talk to, just know that I'm always there. I want to help you Ru. I'm your friend after all.

Before Ruhaan could say a word, there was a sharp knock at the door. 

Mitali; Can I come in?

Ruhaan stood up seeing her. So did Akriti, with annoyance.

Mitali: I see you guys are in some deep conversation. Sorry to intrude ,but Ruhaan, can you come with me for just a sec? Miss Diana wants to talk to you.

Ruhaan: Uh.....yeah....sure....yeah. Let's go.

Ruhaan turned to leave.

Akriti: See you later, Ru.

Ruhaan: Yeah.

Saying that, they both went out of the room and started walking ahead.

Mitali: Hey, can I ask you something?

Ruhaan: Yeah, sure.

Mitali: This Akriti girl, how long have you known her?

Ruhaan: Um......She was Tapasya's friend in school.I've known her since then.

Mitali: And by any chance do you have any idea that she has feelings for you?

Ruhaan:(surprised) What?! No, she doesn't.

Mitali: Trust me, Ruhaan. She does.

Ruhaan: How do you know that?

Mitali: Well, for starters, no 'friend' consoles you like this.

Saying that, she imitated how Akriti coyly slid her hands on top his.

Ruhaan: Oh come on!

Mitali: Look, you may have read more books than me, but I have more knowledge of this stuff than you will ever have!

Ruhaan made a face.

Mitali: It's the truth!Some people just pretend to care, just so that they can get a better seat to watch your struggle.Every helping hand isn't always there to help.

Ruhaan: So you're saying that whatever she did over there was....

Mitali: Was because she wanted to poison your mind about Tapasya.

Ruhaan: And why would she do that?

Mitali: Are you not listening to me?! She has feelings for you, dumbass! 

Ruhaan: Don't work yourself up, Mitali! How would she know about my crush on Tapasya?

Mitali: Dude! Everyone in this college knows that you have a crush on Tapasya, except Tapasya herself!

Ruhaan: Really?

Mitali: Yes! This kind of dumbness is expected from Adi, not you Ruhaan!

Ruhaan:(Sigh) This is so messed up.

Mitali: It surely is. 

Ruhaan sank down to the chair beside him. 

Mitali: Listen, actually........I came here to talk about..........Tapasya.

Ruhaan: What about it?

Mitali: Ruhaan, don't you think you're overreacting a little bit? I mean, yeah, what she did was wrong. I'm not defending her on that. But not talking to her , ignoring her, isn't the solution to that.

Ruhaan: Mitali,............do you know why I am angry at her?

Mitali: Yeah, because she doesn't like me.

Ruhaan: No,.......I'm angry at her because she lied , about liking you.

Mitali raised her eyebrows in question.

Ruhaan: I hate people who lie to me, Mitali. I can't stand lies. And there's a reason for that. A reason of which Tapasya is well aware of.

Mitali: What reason?

Ruhaan: (Taking a deep breath) My Mom and Dad were considered the perfect couple. Everything about them was perfect. They loved each other and each other's families immensely. People thought that they were one of those 'Rab ne bana di jodi' types. But as it is said, everything that looks good from outside, isn't always great from inside . Only I knew how much they fought everyday. They would scream at each other, throw things at each other. Everything was a chaos. But then, again, they would dress up and play pretend. Acting like there was nothing wrong between them. Lying to the world. That's what they did everyday. And I had to bear the cost of their lies every single day. I hated it. It made me sick of lies. 

Mitali: Are your parents still........?

Ruhaan: No. They seperated 5 years ago. It's weird because, I might be the first child to be happy at his parents's seperation. 

Mitali: I'm so sorry.

Ruhaan: Don't be. I just,.......I don't want my relationship with Tapasya to be like my parents's relationship. I don't want her to pretend that she likes somebody, just because I like him/her. After all she can't pretend forever, can she?

The bell rang at that very moment.

Ruhaan: See you later, Mitali.

Saying that, he rushed past the students to his classroom, leaving Mitali perplexed about what to do next..................
