~Next Day~
As Mitali sat by the window of her room, staring at her courtyard that was swarming with guests, she suddenly felt uneasy. A horrible sense of nausea filled her as the nervousness of starting a new phase of her life crept in. The fact that she was actually getting married suddenly hit her , making her feel nervous.
She closed her eyes and focused on her breathing. Her parents' faces flashed in front of her eyes. They were..... frowning? Almost like they were sad. Were they not happy with her decision? Was she about to make a mistake?
She quickly opened her eyes and shook her head. No, she was just imagining things. She was letting the nervousness get to her head. Why would her parents be sad? Rishi was a great guy and a perfect fit for her. No, there was no way in hell she was making mistake.
From her peripheral vision, she saw Payal come into her room. She straightened and put on a plastic smile.
Payal: Di! Come on, it's time. Dadi is calling you downstairs. The shagun ceremony is about to begin.
Mitali nodded slightly and glanced at her reflection in the mirror one last time. She was wearing a peach saree with a thick zari border, giving it an elegant touch.
She smiled slightly.
Payal accompanied her as she went downstairs to the overly lit and decorated living room, where swarms of people stood nonchalantly waiting for her. Their heads turned towards her as she slowly trailed downstairs.
Her eyes surfed through the crowd and spotted a familiar face smiling at her.
She smiled slightly as Rishi beamed at her. Breaking her gaze from him, her eyes spotted her friends, standing in a corner. They were looking at her with their empathetic eyes.
And there he was. Beside Tapasya, with his hands folded in front of his chest, wearing a white sherwani. His eyes caught her staring at him. Mitali immediately averted her gaze.
As she slowly made her way beside Rishi, she saw her Dadi grinning from a distance. She passed her a genuine smile.
The priest asked the duo to sit down and started chanting his mantras. Mitali looked at Rishi once and found him deeply concentrated in the puja. She immediately felt bad for not being attentive and tried to focus.
She could feel his gaze on her. Somehow. She couldn't focus. He was the only thing on her mind in that very moment.
Or probably every moment of every day.
She glanced over at him. And she was right. His gaze was fixed on her. His mint swirled eyes peering through her, wanting to break her down.
The priest voice brought her attention back to the current scenario in front of her. He asked her to extend her hand to receive the shagun from Rishi's dad. She nodded and did the same.
Arjun kneeled in front of his son and future daughter in law and passed them a wide smile. He gave Mitali the shagun ka jora and said,
Arjun: This is Rishi's mother's saree. If she was here , she would have really loved to see you wear this on your engagement.
Mitali's hands trembled as she took the gift. Adi noticed that. So did Rishi.
He suddenly put his hand under hers. Mitali smiled slightly at him before turning back and nodding. Rishi looked back and forth between his dad and her with a smile etched on his face.
Arjun smiled and blessed the duo.
Once the rituals were over and all the guests had finally finished pestering her with hundreds of compliments, she slowly made her way back to her room to rest.
Keeping the shagun safely in her cupboard, she plopped on her bed and sighed.
The door to her room suddenly creaked and Adi stepped in. Mitali sat up in surprise. Her eyes widened.
Mitali: What are you doing here?!
Adi , ignoring her words, sat beside her on the bed and said,
Adi: Wow! I'm having a diabolical sense of deja vu.
Mitali: Huh?
Adi: Don't you remember? The day before our exam....in Ruhaan's house......
A sudden gush of memory flooded her mind. The day when they had confessed everything to each other......
She immediately stood up and shook her head. No, she couldn't let him get to her mind.
Mitali: Whatever, Adi. Why are you here?
Adi stood up confidently and looking her straight in the eye, he said,
Adi: I saw you.
Mitali: What?
Adi: I saw your hands when you were taking the shagun from Rishi's dad. I saw how bad your hands were trembling.
Mitali gulped and averted her gaze. What was she supposed to say to him?
Adi: Tell me! Tell me why were your hands trembling while taking the shagun?
Mitali inhaled deeply and composing herself, she said,
Mitali: Tumhe yeh sach to dikha ki shagun lete vaqt mere hath kaap rahe the....par yeh sach nahi dikha ki maine voh shagun liya?
Adi furrowed his brows.
Mitali: Don't make this any difficult for me than it already is , Adi. Cause I am going to put a ring on Rishi's finger in 24 hours whether you like it or not.
Adi staggered back a bit as Mitali glared at him. She turned around to leave but Adi grabbed her wrist and spun her , pulling her closer to his chest. Mitali's breathing became heavy again.
She avoided looking into his mint swirled eyes, afraid that they might drown her yet again.Adi: Then look into my eyes and say that you don't love me anymore. Say it!
Mitali looked into his lapis lazuli's as words failed to come out of her mouth. She froze in her place unable to comprehend her next move.
Adi: Say that you're over me! Say that you're done with me and don't want anything to do with me!
Mitali's eyes pricked with tears but she kept her composure.
Adi: You can't, can you?
Mitali breathed heavily and looked down, mentally cursing herself for not being strong enough to lie to his face.
Mitali: I-
She stopped abruptly and froze in her spot. Her eyes widened.
Standing at the door was.....
