Phana sat on the bleachers going over the details of freshmen and sophomores who made it to the finals in the try-outs for Basketball team. "We need four to replace seniors and we have only three" he sighed.
'Woodhaven High' was the only junior college or high school in the small town of Woodhaven, situated right at the entrance of Mystic Forest. Local used to say that the name suits the wilderness as it was supposed to be home of many mystic creatures.
While the present generation thought them as just legends and stories, they still avoided going deep into the forest for the very fear of wild animals.
A small town, with close knitted group of locals, but that they had to boast was their High School's Basket Ball team. Lead by Phana Kongathin it has been the reigning state champions for past three years and they wanted to continue the record this year as well.
"How about that Ben kid?" Beam Baramee, Phana's best friend since elementary suggested
"Over my dead body" Earth, their vice-captain who was a junior commented, "his attitude is worst"
Phana sighed as he let the other two bicker among them, he scanned through the list – he had finalized on three kids – Posh, his brother who is a freshmen. Wai and Mingkwan who were in sophomore.
He was thinking between Ben and Alec who were good but seemed to have attitude problem and then there was Chen who was not a great but a decent player.
"Guys, what do you think about Mingk..." and he stopped mid-sentence when suddenly, it felt as if Kit was in trouble – Kit or Kittinan Intanochar, his other best friend since elementary and together the trio was named "The Trouble" by anyone who knew them.
As if on impulse, he turned to his left only to see Kit hold his chest and fall face first into that new kid.
"KITTTTTT" Phana screamed as he ran to his best friend immediately followed by Beam and Earth.
"What the hell did you do?" Phana quickly pulled Ming off Kit while Beam attended to their friend, he was ready to throw the punch but held himself back when he saw despair on the tall kid's face
"I don't know..." Ming tried to explain "He struggled to breathe and then just fainted" as he held on to Phana's left hand that here holding him by his collar "I didn't do anything... I swear"
"Let's take him to the nurse's office" Beam said as he picked up Kit
"Let me help" Phana quickly moved to assist Beam as they rushed to get help.
Ming and Earth followed the trio, and Posh joined them "What happened?"
"I don't know" Ming said worried.
"I have never seen Phana hold back from punching someone" Posh chuckled "I wonder why he stopped"
When Ming gave him an are you for real look, "I am his younger brother" he smiled "Don't worry – Kit will be fine"
Ming only nodded, but couldn't help that nagging fear, fear for the stranger in his heart – he followed them in silence and waited outside the nurse's station.
Posh joined Ming on his left, "I am posh – you are the new kid right, Mingkwan?"
Ming only looked at him and nodded
"Don't mind me – it just looked like you needed a friend" Posh said as he sat down "I am worried about Kit as well, he is the best among those three morons"
"Let him talk, will you" Earth said as he walked towards the two "I am earth, welcome to Woodhaven and our basketball team" he extended his hands to Ming who looked at it for a whole minute before shaking it
