Alex had been trying his hardest to avoid Jack for the rest of the week. However, the boy just seemed to follow him like some little lost puppy dog, (which was actually quite true), but Alex couldn’t be dealing with that.

Jack was yet to have made a friend at Kingsland, which surprised Alex, he assumed that people would be swarming him, not allowing enough room for the poor guy to breathe. Perhaps Jack himself thought that, a new start meant new people, leave the past behind, look forward to the future. Sitting on your own at lunch wouldn’t be classed as a future, though.

It was Friday, officially the start to the weekend, and Alex only had one lesson today. (That was a lie, he honestly had three, but he couldn’t be bothered to attend double Sociology). Unfortunately, that one lesson seemed to be one he was forced into sharing with that damned American.

Jack’s eyes lit up as he noticed Alex barge through the door to their English class. He hoped that maybe he could make amends for whatever it was he seemed to have done wrong on that first day. “Alex!” He called enthusiastically, beckoning the male into the spare seat available beside him.

Alex frowned, searching for another space, but it was either Jack or that weird girl who seemed to dribble on everything she owned. Wrinkling his nose, he was thinking of turning to walk out the door, but that wouldn’t solve anything. He couldn’t just ignore the stupid kid forever.

Throwing his bag on the table, Alex slouched into the chair, arms folded across his chest. Jack sighed, it seemed Alex was still trying to be as awkward as ever. “Sorry but... what exactly is your problem with me?” It took guts, but Jack knew it was something he had to do. If he didn’t speak up now, he’d probably end up ignoring the boy for the rest of the year, and sadly, Alex seemed to be his only hope of friendship in this stupid school.

Alex shrugged his shoulders, swiping his fringe out of his eyes as he stared down at the wooden desk. His finger traced along the carvings etched into the pine, mainly names, or things such as, ‘R.D ‘ERE 03’ or even, ‘Z.M <3 COCK’ immature little sketches that would make Alex cry with laughter back in the day.

“Nothing.” He simply commented, forgetting Jack had addressed him.

“It can’t be nothing if you’re purposely avoiding me.”

Jack sounded hurt, Alex groaned, he didn’t want to pity the boy.

“Look, I just- Why do you wanna know me? We aren’t the same, we’re from two different backgrounds. You stick to what you know, and I’ll do the same.” He gave into the tension, but honestly felt glad to have said everything, finally.

“Even though you’re being a douche right now, when we talked on the field, just for that five minutes, I felt like I had a friend. I don’t care what type of person you are, you’re still human, as am I.”

Wow, Jack really knew how to cut deep into Alex. “Ugh, fucking Americans, always right.” He muttered, loud enough for Jack to hear. The other boy smiled proudly, glad to have the message sink into the awkward male.

“I bet you’ve lived here your whole life, I bet you’ve never been an outsider.”

“Oh? And how do you know that?”

“If you were, maybe you’d realise why I depend on you, an almost stranger, so much.”

Alex’s finger paused from tracing patterns, and he looked up to Jack, who was looking down at him with fear in his eyes. “Please, Alex. I’ve been here for what, four days? And you’re the only person who’s said a single word to me, even if the last words weren’t the nicest things. Just... okay, you don’t have to talk with me, you don’t have to act like you know me, but please, don’t leave me on my own?” It seemed like a fair deal, but Alex shook his head.
