Chapter 29

Alex hated not having Jack around, especially on a day like today.

He knew he would be pushing his luck by asking Jack to stay one more night, yesterday, though. Not because his parents would refuse, (he highly doubted that), but he knew that Jack’s own mother would get irritated.

He already felt guilty enough knowing that Jack was lying to her when he stayed over the night before last.

Although their peers at school understood their relationship, many just choosing to ignore the situation entirely, neither of the boys’ parents knew. At least, not officially.

Alex didn’t quite understand why Jack had to lie to his mum about his whereabouts, though. When he questioned the American boy after he finished his phone call with the woman, he just shrugged it off. “Dunno.” Was all he could mutter, and it was obvious he was uncomfortable. Alex knew he should have confronted him, but he hadn’t the heart, he just wanted to have a good night with his new beau, and that he did.

Yesterday was as close to perfect as it could be in Alex’s eyes. After the two of them managed to clean themselves and the kitchen up, they settled on the couch, Jack forcing him to watch Mean Girls so he could rap like Kevin Gnapoor.

And as the movie finished, there was that silence that they had become used to. A comfortable silence.

But it was the silence that caused Alex to over think as his fingers softly stroked Jack’s dark hair.

He couldn’t help but to imagine how much easier everything would be if maybe his parents knew...

I mean, let’s face it, at least there’d be no paranoia, right?

Alex wouldn’t have to keep being on edge in fear that his mother or father would walk in, catching them snuggling together. Jack would be closer in the family, too. The boy could come to family get-togethers with him if he wanted to, he could be introduced to the rest of Alex’s extended family, his grandparents, his cousins, Alex would gladly show his partner to all of them because he was so fucking proud.

The more he thought about the list of possibilities, the more Alex wanted to tell his parents. He was certain that him and Jack would last, he promised the boy forever, didn’t he?

Sure, it might be awkward, but if he could just explain himself, to his mother at least, surely she’d understand? No matter what, he was still her son...

So that led to Alex spilling his thoughts to Jack, and the other boy seemed all in favour, incredibly proud if anything.

Yet... when Alex asked Jack if his mother knew about him, there was another silence which was far from comfortable.

“No.” Jack had murmured it beneath his breath as if hoping for Alex to not hear, so that if the boy asked him to repeat he could say, “I already told you.” And then try to change topic.

But Alex heard.

“Why not?” He’d asked, and Jack had shifted on the sofa uncomfortably.

“Dunno.” The same answer from before.

Alex wasn’t prepared for this bullshit, not anymore. Jack had been hiding something.

So as they sat, Alex couldn’t take it anymore. “Something’s up, Jack. Now just tell me, otherwise you can leave.”

And obviously, Alex knew that Jack didn’t want to leave, and Jack realised this, too.

Eventually, everything came spilling out.

“I haven’t told my mom because... ugh, when I woke up in hospital, my mom just kept asking me about why I did it, why I cut myself.” He’d started quietly, “So I explained every single fucking detail that happened between us, a-and she just looked so angry, Alex. Sh-she told me that you didn’t deserve me, a-and she d-didn’t want me to get involved with you when I was released...”
