The Attention

“Stop looking at the darn news!” I scoffed Louis who was seating at the kitchen table frowning at an article on the internet. He had been doing nothing but reading up on himself online since this whole thing came out. I mean it was bad enough having photographers practically moving in on our lawn but having him moping around as well was just depressing!

“Sorry.” He sounded apologetic, and I knew he couldn’t help it. When the Harry thing happened I couldn’t bring myself to read anything about it but I knew Harry was doing so. I knew exactly how horrible people would be acting so I couldn’t bring myself to read a bit of it. Bad news about yourself is addicting, once you read one thing you can’t stop and no matter how bad it made you feel you felt as though you had to read every single article just in case you missed something. You lose control of your life and there was no way I was letting Louis do that to himself!

I took his hand and marched him unwillingly over towards the front window. As soon as I played with the curtains I knew there would be at least one photographer notice the sudden movement. I made sure we were exposed to the nosy morons in our yard and pulled Louis in for a passionate kiss. He was confused but didn’t object to the kiss instead he deepened it to my own delight.

When we broke apart I quickly closed the curtains once again and walked proudly back to the table.

“Jay, I don’t think...” he started to doubt my little stunt but I instantly cut him off.

“No Louis you may have been in this business longer than me, but I know what I’m doing. This is my life too.” And with that I stormed off with my cup of tea in my grip.

I walked into the spare room where Harry was playing cars with Nicholas on the bed. I sat down on the other side of the two boys and Harry hardly even looked up. I knew Nick noticed that I was there because he gave me the biggest smile I’d seen in a long time.

“So Harry, why are you still here?” I asked him although I wasn’t anywhere near serious.

“I love being waited on.” He joked

“Yeah well I can only imagine what the press have come up with out there knowing that you’re in here. They probably think that Marie girl is secretly living here as well. I mean the marriage could be a secret cover up.” I joked back at him. He laughed and shook his head at me. I didn’t think the idea was that unappealing I mean he did used to like me not too long ago what changed?

“Jay I like Rebecca.” He confessed but couldn’t look me in the eye.

“How did I not guess that!” I exclaimed and he looked startled. I started to laugh, of course he did. It was so obvious now!

“Let me guess, don’t tell her I’m not ready right?” I asked and he nodded.

“Okie Dokie Harry your secret is safe with me.” He smiled and turned back to Nick, I didn’t bother excusing myself and left the room without saying another word. I had more important things to worry about.

“So do you think we can get the permits?” I asked into the phone. I had been taking various phone calls all morning trying to sort out my new television series and everything was going to plan until now. Apparently I needed permits for producing my own show, who would have thought?

Connor came crawling over to me, and I knew in an instant that he needed changing. Why hadn’t anyone figured that out yet? The three adults who lived in this house hadn’t thought to change him? I mean I was in the middle of important business here!

“I’ll have to call you back.” I quickly told the man on the phone. He didn’t seem impressed but what could I do? Like always I had to fix the mess up in this house.

“Let’s go and get you changed little mister.” I said to him as I picked him up. The house was silent as I walked down stairs to the change room.

“Hello?” I called out and no one answered me.

Strange, either nobody was here or they were all ignoring me!

I looked out the window to see all four of them sitting on the grass eating sandwiches without a pap in sight. I ran to change Connor quickly before joining them all on the grass.

“We have our yard back!” I exclaimed and they all smiled.

“We do!” Louis cheered and Rebecca smiled. I did happen to notice Harry admiring her from the other side of the picnic rug.

“Care if we join you?” I asked and they all made room for us to squeeze in.

“This is the best part of a scandal.” I announced and everyone agreed.

We started to talk about what life would be like if none of us were famous, Louis and I would never had met he’d be living in Doncaster to be nearer his mother and I’d still be in Sydney doing some job I’d never enjoy. Imagine if none of us had reached out to pursue our dreams, it was proof in a way that dreams could only come true if you followed them. I knew that was a lesson I would have to teach the boys as they grew older and I knew Louis would do the same.

My phone started blaring, I answered it straight away.

“Jay what do I do? I mean she’s, she’s coughing and her whole body is hot and she won’t stop crying! Jay, please help me, I think she’s sick my poor baby. I’m a terrible mother!!” Penny said without a single breath. I could hardly understand a thing she was trying to say.

“Penny calm down. Just take her to the doctor and see what’s wrong with her. She’s probably got a cold.” I held back the giggles. I knew what it was like to be a first time mother Louis could vouch for me, there was more than one episode where I completely freaked out that something worse was happening than the reality.

“You’re so right. Thank-you!” she soon ended the call and I could finally start to chuckle.
