Maxie moaned. He'd been dying for a mouth full for some time now and he couldn't wait for more.
Oscar smirked at him from his place at the driver's seat. "You're really into that
burger, aren't you?""Everyone hates me so I've been avoiding the kitchen," he replied once he swallowed.
"Oh," Oscar replied, his eyes falling to his lap. "Sorry if that was my fault."
Maxie shook his head, taking another bite. "Nah, I've been doing it since the day we had that talk."
He finished eating. He wasn't in the mood to talk until he'd devoured the McDonald's burger. It was an unspoken mutual decision to come here, Oscar having quirked his brow as soon as they saw the glowing M in the distance.
"So what is the deal? With your whole... job?"
"Nice pun."
"Thanks I worked really hard on it while I was chowing down," he replied, bringing the straw of his drink to his lips.
"Listen man, my loan isn't all that much. I'm in Uni, I'm in a band, I need a flexible job that keeps everything comfortable, pays booking fees, my kit."
"So you're what? Everyone's weed guy?"
Oscar rolled his eyes although his smile was light. "You could say that, yeah."
"You're so chill about it now. Why were you so secretive about it when I caught you that day in the alley?"
Oscar sighed and leaned back. "Because I didn't know what you'd think."
"And you care what I think, why?"
Oscar's eyes returned to the boy in his passenger seat, his face more serious. "You told me about your mother. That night. When you..."
"When I puked outside of a club. I remember."
"Yeah that one."
Maxie's sat back again and looked out forward at their few. McDonald's. "I'm not stupid. I know what people do. Its my choice not to do it. Everyone else can... make their own decisions."
"I know, but... it didn't seem right. You told me some shit and... I don't know. I didn't want you to think I was someone you needed to stay away from."
The lightness in Maxie's expression dropped and his eyes went back to Oscar's blue ones.
"I don't get you," he said.
Oscar shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know either, man."
"Well, that's not good enough," Maxie's voice became more stern.
"I'm sorry about what I said to you. I was out of order." Oscar really sounded like he meant it. It almost sounded as if it was painful to say that. "I feel terrible about it. I was just going through a lot of stuff and I don't know. I guess I was scared of you because I felt comfortable enough around you to tell you something I only tell my closest friends. I really am sorry."
Maxie drank while the other spoke.
"Can we just be okay again?"
Maxie stopped.
"No. We can't just be okay," he said simply.
Oscar closed his eyes and leaned his head back. "I'm sorry," he said again.
"I'm not just going to forgive you because you say sorry. Don't get me wrong, I completely get what you were going through and I know why you did what you did. I'm on your side but you were also spoke to me like shit. You humiliated me, made me feel so bad about myself. You don't just one day decide you like me again, say sorry and everything is good."
