ian was seven years old, giggling as nick played with him in the yard. kiernan watched from the porch, smiling slightly. "ian, it's time to come in!" she called, nick and ian looking up and pouting. "it's dinnertime, you know that. dinner, bath, bed." kiernan hummed, opening the door as ian ran inside.
nick followed, smiling at kiernan. "am i allowed to raid your kitchen?"
"you eat with us everyday, nick," kiernan laughed, "you don't have to raid the kitchen, just sit at the table." she rolled her eyes, walking into the kitchen.
ian was smiling brightly at the table, swaying softly in his seat as he looked around the living room.

ian laid down, smiling when nick waved and walked down the hall. ian's smile slowly faded, biting his lip and getting out of bed, running down the hallway to catch up with nick. "uncle nick!" ian panted, tugging on nick's shirt.
nick looked down, raising an eyebrow and turning. "what's up, ian?"
"can you stay tonight?" ian questioned, biting his lip and catching his breath.
nick stared down at ian, leaning down so that he was eye level with ian. "why?"
"momma gets sad at night, i hear her crying..i don't like hearing momma cry, i think something scares her." ian whispered, "it started scaring her after daddy died, maybe he kept it away from her uncle nick..but daddy isn't here anymore and maybe you can keep it away from her tonight."
nick smiled sadly, ruffling ian's hair gently. "i'll try, ian. but if she tells me to leave, i gotta leave."
ian smiled brightly, nodding. "can you tuck me in? i don't want the thing that scares momma to scare me."
nick nodded softly, leaning up and leading ian back to his room, tucking the seven year old in quietly. "goodnight, ian."
"night, uncle nick." ian murmured, turning and facing the wall, slowly falling asleep.
nick smiled, getting up and knocking on kiernan's bedroom door.
"ian-" kiernan started, sniffling softly and opening the door, her mouth opening slightly. "nick? why're you still here?"
"well, i was gonna leave, but ian thinks there's something scaring you in the night. he doesn't like when his momma cries." nick whispered, kiernan frowning and nodding softly.
"he wants you to stay and keep the scary thing away from me, doesn't he?" kiernan asked softly, biting her lip.
nick nodded, "he does. i know there's no scary thing, spellman. i do, but..at least let me stay on the couch? ian asked me to stay, and i told him that if you told me to leave i'd have to, but i really don't wanna see him frown anymore."
kiernan smiled, nodding and walking back into her room, grabbing a pillow and a blanket and leading nick into the living room.
nick opened his mouth to tell her that he could put the blanket down himself, but kiernan held her finger up and put the blanket neatly on the couch, setting the pillow down gently. "goodnight, nick." she smiled slightly.
"goodnight, spellman." nick whispered, sitting on the couch and hesitantly pulling his shoes off, kiernan walking back to her bedroom.
