Chapter 6
"Remind me again why I'm taking Honors Math?" I say to my mom as I'm sitting at the kitchen table.
"Because you are a smart girl Kelly."
"Gee thanks"
My mom laughs as my attention goes back to my textbook.
"I really don't understand this." I grumble.
My mom puts down the dish she was washing and dries her hands on her apron before coming over to the table and leaning her palms against the wooden surface.
She studies the problem for a good minute before she shrugs her shoulders and goes back to the sink.
"You're not gonna help me?" I pout.
"You'd do better asking your father, he's the smart one."
I groan and rest my head in my hand.
I begin tapping my pencil against the book as my mom finishes up the dishes.
She comes and takes a seat next to me at the table before pulling my book away.
"Not that I don't love you doing your homework, but what do you say you and I pop in a movie and I'll make some popcorn. We can have a girls night while the boys do the manly stuff."
"Yes please! I need to give my brain a break."
My mom stands up and heads into the living room with me following close behind.
"What are you in the mood for today?" Mom asks.
I walk over to join her at the bookcase where all our movies are and scan the shelves.
"You decide and I'll get started on the popcorn"
I nod at her and she walks back into the kitchen.
I finally pick out a few movies and walk into the kitchen.
"Okay mom Hemsworth or Efron."
"Oh that depends. Is it Chris or Liam?"
"Mom this is me you're talking about it's obviously Liam."
My mom chuckles as she takes the bag of popcorn out of the microwave.
"I guess I'd have to go with Hemsworth."
I internally leap for joy as I rush back into the living room and put the first Hunger Games in.
I grab a few blankets and pillows and set them up on the couch before sitting down and bundling myself up.
Mom joins me shortly after with a huge bowl of fresh popcorn and two sodas. She takes a seat next to me and puts the blanket over her legs before handing me the popcorn bucket.
"You know your father still hasn't watched this." Mom says with a chuckle.
"What? How could he not! This movie is one of the best things ever! Liam Hemsworth may not be shirtless the whole time but still he's a hunk."
Mom and I laugh as the intro to the movie begins.
Katniss hadn't even sung the meadow song the first time before there's a sharp knock at the door.
Mom pauses the movie and starts to get up, but I beat her to it.
"I got it mom."
She smiles at me and relaxes back into the couch as I make my way to the door.
The knock comes again.
"I'm coming!" I shout.
I reach the door and turn the handle, before pulling it open. What I see on the other side makes me stop in my tracks.
