Character Background: Oliver was a simple man. He was intrigued by most things and wanted to know more about the unknown. This is most likely what drew him Angel when he first met her.
When Oliver was growing up, he became curious about hunters, so he decided to take the hunter exam when he was 14. He failed his first attempt but came back the next year and passed. Oliver learned how to control and use his aura by a nen master named Bisky. He developed a close friendship with Bisky's other student at the time, Wing.
Oliver usually keeps his distance from women after his passed failed relationship with a woman whom he dated three years before we meet him in the story. He has never experienced any sort of betrayal or lose of any kind before then, so it's the most heartbreaking memory he has.
When Oliver meets Angel, he didn't expect her to put up much of a fight and he didn't think she would have the discipline to learn nen, but he was mistaken. Her willingness to keep fighting despite her chances of winning being close to zero struck a chord with him. He thought she was interestingly beautiful and he was intrigued the more he stayed by her side and watched her progress.
