Chapter 30

Tuesday
"This just in Clare Jonas has been rushed to a local hospital here in California after collapsing at the airport after their flight from Italy, we know know how or why it happened but we have people on standby and will give updates as soon as we hear anything else"
(The jonas family are in the hospital waiting room, nick's pacing back and forth, joe and Kevin are trying to calm him down. Alena and Tina are sitting in the chairs and Sophie and Dani are sitting with them)
Nick: has anyone called Selena, I don't want her to hear about this on the news
Demi: I'll go call her babe (takes her phone out and walks out of the room)
Phone convo
Selena: hey dems what's up?
Demi: hey Selena are you in California yet?
Selena: we just landed why?
Demi: Clare fainted when we landed, we don't know why yet the doctors are running tests and she hasn't woken up yet
Selena: what!? How did she faint?
Demi: Alena handed her the bag and the next thing we know Alena yelled her name, Clare was on the floor we'll tell you more when you get here
Selena: okay Justin and I are on our way
Demi: okay see you in a little bit
Selena: bye

Scene change
Selena: turn around we have to go to the hospital
Justin: why? Is everything okay?
Selena: no Clare fainted at the airport we have to go now Justin
Justin: okay (turns the car around) everything's going to be fine, she's going to be fine babe
Selena: how do you know that Justin? God I knew something was wrong when she texted us, I felt it
Justin: why didn't you call nick then?
Selena: because I didn't want to believe that something could be wrong and now she's in the hospital
Justin: you can't blame yourself, you didn't know and if anything nick and Demi should have been looking out for her better if they knew something was wrong
Selena: your right... maybe she should come back with us
Justin: I don't know we'll find out more when we get there
Selena: okay
Back at the hospital
Tina: this is our fault you know that right Alena? If we just said something she probably wouldn't be in the hospital right now
Alena: (sighs) we should have said something the minute she started not eating, we have known about this for a month and we didn't do anything (puts her head in her hands)
Tina: it's okay Alena she's going to be fine (wraps an arm around her)
Alena: we need to tell dad what we knew and then we need to tell uncle nick and Selena, I feel so guilty (starts crying)
Tina: it's okay Alena (hugs her and Dani walks over)
Dani: aww girls your cousin's going to be fine I promise she's strong and a fighter
Alena: mommy we have something to tell you and daddy
Dani: okay let me go get him
(Dani walks over to Kevin and then the door opens and Selena and Justin walk in and walk over to them)
Selena: have you heard anything yet?
Nick: no they are still running tests
Selena: can I talk to you for a minute in private
Nick: yeah let's go outside
(They walk away from everyone)
Selena: how could you have let this happen? I let our daughter go with you for the summer and she ends up in the hospital!
Nick: okay I understand your upset I am too but the last thing we need is to cause a scene by yelling
Selena: (sighs) your right I am sorry I am just worried
Nick: me too but she's going to be fine okay (hugs her)
Selena: (crying) she's our only daughter nick I am so worried about her
Nick: me too
Joe: hey guys you might want to see this (walks over to them)
Nick: what?
Sophie: when Clare fainted she dropped her phone and joe was trying to get in to see if she was hiding anything and he finally got the code
Selena: and was she hiding something?
Joe: see for yourself (hands Selena and nick the phone and it's on instagram)
Selena: please don't tell me she did this because of all the hate comments
Nick: we asked her if she was getting hate and she said no why did she lie to us?
Demi: nick we knew something was going on with her we should have known
Justin: don't blame yourselves if there's one thing we know about Clare is she loves her secrets
Nick: yeah but we asked her and she lied to us
Selena: let's not focus on that right now okay I just want to know if she's going to be okay
(A few minutes later a doctor comes out)
Doctor: family of Clare Jonas
(Nick and Selena stand up and walk over to the doctor)
Nick: I am her dad and that's her mom
Doctor: okay well we ran some tests and the reason she fainted was because she hasn't had any food in her system for a while now, i am sorry to tell you guys this but it seems like she was starving herself and therefore she's been diagnosed anorexic so we have given her an IV to get fluids in her body and she should be waking up soon
Nick: thank you so much, can we see her?
Doctor: of course she's in room 201, you and your family can go just don't crowd the room
Nick: okay thank you
Selena: (crying) I can't believe she's anorexic how could we have let this happen nick
Nick: I am so sorry Selena if Demi and I looked at the signs we should have known
Selena: (wipes her tears) it's not your fault, she should have told you that the hate was getting to much or at least how she was feeling
Nick: yeah but we'll deal with all of that when she's home for now let's get everyone and go see her
Selena: okay
(Nick and Selena walk back to the family)
Nick: we can go see her but she's still sleeping
Joe: what did the doctor say?
Selena: she's anorexic
Demi: oh my god Selena I am so sorry (walks over to her hugs her and Selena starts crying) I am sorry I should have seen the signs, I should have known
Selena: it's not your fault Demi
Demi: your not mad at me?
Selena: no I am not mad at anyone maybe a little bit at Clare because she should have said something but we'll deal with that later
Sophie: can we see her?
Nick: yeah let's go to the room
Dani: Kevin and I will catch up the girls wanted to tell us something
Nick: okay it's room 201
(The rest of the Jonas family start walking to the room)
Kevin: what's wrong girls?
Tina: it's our fault that Clare's anorexic
Kevin: you can't blame yourselves you didn't know what was going on none of us did
Alena: that's where your wrong
Dani: what do you mean?
Alena: (wipes her tears) we knew something was wrong with Clare, Tina and I would see her throw away the food or cut it into tiny pieces
Tina: and when we split food together she would only eat one or two pieces
Alena: and the other day at the radio station we followed her to the bathroom and heard her throwing up (starts crying)
Kevin: if you knew all this time why didn't you say anything?
Alena: w w we didn't know what to say
Kevin: what do you mean you didn't know what to say? Girls you should have said something the minute you knew something was going on!
Dani: Kevin I understand your upset but this isn't the time or the place to be yelling right now
Kevin: your right Dani, girls your going to tell nick and Selena and we will deal with consequences later
Tina: daddy
Kevin: yeah
Tina: is it our fault that she's here?
Kevin: (sighs) no she should have said something too but I would never blame you guys for this, now let's go see your cousin okay?
Alena: okay
(They walk over to room 201 where nick and Selena are holding Clare's hands, Justin is standing by Selena and Demi is next to nick with joe and Sophie in the other chairs)
Alena: uncle nick, Selena can we tell you guys something
Selena: yeah do you want to go outside?
Alena: the family's going to find out eventually so we might as well just say it
Nick: say what?
Tina: we knew Clare stopped eating, she never really ate and when she did she would pretend
Alena: and the other day at the radio station we heard her throwing up but she said it was the McDonald's
Nick: you knew something was wrong the whole time and you didn't say anything?
Alena: no we are sorry uncle nick, Selena we should have said something sooner
Selena: yeah do you know how dangerous it is not to speak up when you know something's wrong
Tina: yeah we just didn't want to believe that she would starve herself we are sorry
Nick: (sighs) there's going to be consequences for keeping secrets and I am not just talking about you girls, I am also talking about Clare but this isn't the place to deal with it so for now let's just drop it okay?
Tina: okay
(A few minutes later Clare opens her eyes)
Selena: hey baby girl how are you feeling?
Clare: (mumbles) tired
Joe: you gave us quite a scare kid
Clare: I am sorry uncle joe
Joe: I am just glad your okay
Justin: why didn't you tell them about the hate?
Selena: we'll talk about that later okay? Right now I am just so glad your okay (kisses her forehead)
Nick: (hugs her) you really scared me you know
Clare: I am sorry daddy
Nick: (tears in his eyes) don't worry about that right now let's just get you home okay?
Clare: no I really am sorry, I am sorry that I didn't tell you guys about the hate, I am sorry that all this time I have been hiding secrets (starts crying) and now we are in the hospital and I feel so guilty
Nick: hey hey shh shh calm down, the good thing is we know now and there won't be anymore secrets from now on okay?
Clare: (sniffles) okay
(A few minutes later the doctor walks in the room)
Doctor: well I see our patient is awake, how are you feeling?
Clare: tired
Doctor: that's understandable considering the lack of food in your system, also I don't know if your parents informed you yet but your diagnosed as anorexic which can be very serious
Clare: wait did you just say I am anorexic, there has to be a mistake I only did it a couple times, It couldn't have been that bad
Justin: Clare your in a hospital, it's not just bad this is worse case scenario
Clare: so now what?
Doctor: well I'll talk to your parents and we'll come up with a plan but we also ran a few more tests and it seems like diabetes runs in the family am I correct?
Nick: yeah I have type 1 why?
Doctor: well she's at risk, which means she doesn't have it yet but if she continues in the pattern that she's going in the possibility of becoming diabetic is high
Nick: okay thank you for letting us know, when can she go home?
Doctor: let's talk about that outside shall we?
Selena: okay
(Selena and nick follow the doctor out of the room and into the hallway)
Doctor: so in these cases we would recommend rehab for the week and see how she progresses, of course there are other options but that's up to you guys to decide
Selena: she's not doing rehab
Nick: yeah I agree with Selena, she's only fifteen and I don't think she would do well in a rehab center with a bunch of strangers, what are the other options?
Doctor: the other option is to create a plan at home, three meals a day start small because her stomach is going to need time to adjust and make sure that she is never in the bathroom by herself, she needs to be monitored at all times and I recommend at least a therapist so she can talk to someone
Nick: I can agree with the therapist, what about you Selena?
Selena: yeah that's fine and would we updated on her progress with the therapist?
Doctor: of course after every session the therapist will talk to one of you or both of you whatever your comfortable with, I can give you some numbers to call
Selena: thank you so much
Nick: when can she leave?
Doctor: I am going to give her one more IV and you guys can leave afterward
Nick: thank you so much for your help today doctor
Doctor: no problem I'll distribute the IV and then come back later discharge you guys
Nick: okay
(The doctor walks back to the room leaving nick and Selena in the hallway)
Selena: you know I was telling Justin in the car that I wanted Clare to come back with him and I but if I am being honest I think you and Demi would be able to handle this better then Justin and I
Nick: what do you mean?
Selena: you and Demi have gone through this before, you know what the signs are now and you have more people that can watch her, Justin and I aren't going to be able to be watch her the way you guys can because it's him and I plus the management and security team but Clare doesn't know them and they don't know her she wouldn't be comfortable with them
Nick: so are you saying you want Clare to stay with us?
Selena: yeah obviously we're still going to see her and I'll call and check in like we've been doing but I think the best thing for her to stay with you guys
Nick: okay but do you want to stay with us today I think we should just all be together today
Selena: yeah I think so too
Nick: come on let's go back inside and be with our baby girl
Selena: okay
(They walk inside back inside and sit with Clare)
Clare: what did the doctor say? When can I go home?
Nick: after the IV and then Selena and Justin are going to come with us back to the house and we are going to talk about everything that happened okay?
Clare: okay can I have my phone please?
Nick: only if you promise you won't go on social media
Clare: I promise
Nick: okay (hands her the phone)
Clare's pov
I took my phone from dad and saw that my phone was blowing up with text messages from everyone so I started with the group chat I was in with Brent and his friends messages and went in order.

Eva: we love you Clare I hope everything's okay :)
Lexi: hey girl! Please tell me your okay, we still need to go shopping together!
Alan: Lexi Clare's in the hospital and your talking about shopping? Come on
Lexi: sorry I am just trying to keep the situation light
Alex: I hope your okay Clare!
Ben: feel better soon
Clare: thanks guys for the messages and yeah I am in the hospital, I don't want to get into it right now but i'll tell you soon 😘
(Clare then moves on to Ethan and Grayson's texts)
Ethan: Clare Marie Jonas what did you do that got you into the hospital? You better not have done anything stupid
Grayson: or Ethan and I will kill you and bring you back to life and kill you again
Clare: Haha well if you killed me then you wouldn't have a little sister anymore, and don't worry about me I am going to be fine promise
Clare's POV
I finished texting Ethan and Grayson and then scrolled down and saw a text from someone that I didn't think I would ever talk to again, but I found myself typing back.

Ricky: I heard your in the hospital please text me back so I know your okay
Clare: I am fine
Ricky: come on Clare this is me your talking to, you can't tell me your fine and expect me to believe you
Clare: fine I am not, I have anorexia...
Ricky: you were starving yourself!?
Clare: and purging
Ricky: why would you do something so stupid? Do you know how worried I was when I turned the tv on and heard you were in the hospital!
Clare: I didn't think you cared anymore we haven't talked in weeks, why do you care all of a sudden
Ricky: you know I care about you so don't give me that, I want to see you, are you still at the hospital?
Clare: yeah but my family's still here and I am going home in an hour
Ricky: I don't care can I meet you at your house?
Clare: yeah I guess
Ricky: okay I'll see you later
Clare: okay
Ricky: I love you Clare

Clare's pov
I looked at Ricky's text he said that he loved me... I don't know how I feel about that but I knew that I shouldn't focus on that right now so instead I handed dad back my phone and looked over at my cousins who hadn't said a word but I knew what they were thinking.

Clare: it's not your fault you guys
Alena: how could you say that Clare? This is completely our fault we should have said something
Clare: I lied to you guys if anything it's my fault I am in here
Tina: we knew you were struggling though and we knew you were lying to us and we still didn't do anything about it
Clare: it doesn't matter I was the one that lied to not only you guys but everyone, I am in here because of me and my actions, it's my fault (has tears in her eyes) it's my fault I am anorexic
(Demi walks over to her)
Demi: look at me Clare
Clare: what (looks her in the eyes)
Demi: I know your blaming yourself but right now that's not going to help you, you need to accept it and know that we are here for you and we are going to help you okay? I am going to help you through this
Clare: thanks Demi I couldn't have asked for a better stop mom (hugs her)
Demi: I am just so glad your okay
Justin: yeah (goes over and hugs her too)
Clare: I love you guys
Them: we love you too
Clare's POV
Thirty minutes later the IV finished and the doctor came back to the room.

Doctor: how are you feeling now?
Clare: better
Doctor: any dizziness?
Clare: no
Doctor: that's good now we are going to let you go home and please take care of yourself okay?
Clare: I will
(The doctor unhooks the IV and they start leaving the hospital)
Clare's pov
We needed our security team to escort us outside of the hospital and as as soon as were outside their were camera's flashing from the paparazzi trying to get their picture and they were screaming things like "Clare why were you in the hospital!" "Clare what caused you to faint!" "Are you diabetic like your dad!" "Nick and Selena what do you have to say about your daughter being in the hospital!" "Demi is Clare anorexic or self harming!" "Are you taking her to a rehab center!" Dad wrapped his arm around me and hid my face in from the paparazzi like he did when I was younger and I was thankful for it and finally we got to the card and I decided to ride with my mom and Justin since I hadn't seen them since Orlando. Mom sat in the back with her arms wrapped around me and Justin drove.

Selena: I am so glad your okay
Clare: mom you said that already
Selena: I know but I want you to know that because when we get to the house we are going to have a very serious talk and there are going to be consequences but despite that I want you to know that I love you
Clare: I love you too
(Forty minutes of driving later they get to nick and Demi's house)
Clare's POV
We got to the house and let me tell you it felt so good seeing my house after so many weeks being away from it, my dad and uncles along with Justin got the luggage out of the van and a few minutes later we were all in the living room sitting on the couch. The adults were quiet for a little while probably thinking about what they were going to say but you could feel the tension in the air, Alena and Tina looked nervous because they knew that uncle Kevin was upset that they didn't say anything and me well I know there's about to be a lot of changes...

Selena: I guess I'll start by saying Clare why didn't you tell your dad about the hate you were getting?
Clare: because I thought I could handle it
Justin: obviously you couldn't because you started starving yourself so give us a better answer then that
Clare: fine I didn't want to worry them, I knew if I told them what the fans were saying they would get all worried about me and they needed to focus on the tour
Kevin: how many times do we need to say it? You guys come first before anything, making sure you guys are okay is the top priority the band and the fans come second, Alena, Tina we have always told you that if you see something you need to say something so why didn't you?
Alena: we told you why earlier
Joe: so instead of speaking up and saying what was going on with your cousin, her life got put in danger so you realize that?
Tina: yeah and we feel really guilty
Nick: from now on there will be no more secrets in this family, we don't hide anything and if we knew something's going on we say it understand?
Alena: yes uncle nick
Tina: okay uncle nick
Nick: Clare do you understand?
Clare: yes dad
Nick: okay good now this brings me to my next topic Clare from now on there are going to be changes, your going to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and you will be sitting with Demi and I, your not going to be going to the bathroom by yourself because we can't trust that your not going throw it up later so Demi, Sophie or Dani will go with you
Clare: what about Alena and Tina?
Kevin: as of right now they broke our trust which is why you three aren't going to sit together when your eating
Alena: dad don't you think that's a little extreme come on
Joe: no what's extreme is waiting till your cousin lands in the hospital
(Alena stays quiet)
Selena: also I think taking the phone would be a good idea too
Clare: seriously? How am I going to talk to my friends mom!
Selena: don't raise your voice at me, demi and I were talking and we agree that the phone is probably the main trigger and I don't want you going on any social media so the phone's gone
Clare: dad say something please!
Nick: I agree with Demi and your mom, the phone is a trigger, we can keep it and if you get a phone or text we'll tell you but you'll give it right back to me or Demi after, I also think maybe having your own room might not be the best idea...
Clare: where on the road anyway so what does having my own room have anything to do with it?
Nick: I am talking about this week I think you should share with Demi and I, and I don't want you going upstairs by yourself either because you could go into one of the bathrooms if your feeling tempted
Clare: so I have no privacy is basically what your saying?! That's not fair I know I didn't say anything but don't you guys think your overreacting a little bit? I learned my lesson I am not going to purge anymore I promise
Demi: Clare it's not that simple because your going to get triggered and we just want to make sure that your temptations are low and if that means making sure your not by yourself then that's what we are going to do
Clare: this isn't fair
Nick: Clare I don't care if you think it's fair or not because we are talking about your safety at this point
Selena: and now let's talk about the consequences nick
Nick: okay Alena, Tina Kevin and joe are going to punish you because you didn't tell us what was going on when you know you should have and they can decide what they are going to do as you for you Clare, your mom and I are going to Punish you so let's continue this conversation upstairs
Clare: I thought you didn't want me to go upstairs
Nick: you want me to add attitude to your punishment as well?
Clare: no sir
Nick: then let's go upstairs
Kevin: you too girls
Alena: okay
(They walk upstairs nick, Selena and Clare go into her room and Kevin and joe go into a guest room)

Nick: Clare how many times did I ask if you were okay?
Clare: to many to count
Nick: exactly and what did you tell me?
Clare: I was fine
Nick: and when demi and I heard you throwing up and you said it was car sickness why didn't you tell me then?
Clare: because I didn't want you guys to find out
Nick: (sighs) so not only did you lie to me when you said you were okay, you also lied when you said you were eating, and you kept secrets from us which you know we do not do in this family, and you put your life at risk by hurting yourself
Clare: I know I am sorry
Nick: your getting ten from me, ten from your mom, and ten with my belt
Clare: are you serious!? That's too much dad
Selena: you put your life at risk Clare and we need you to know you can never do something like that again now come over my lap
Clare: mom you've never spanked me before
Selena: I know and I am starting to wonder if Justin and I should have now get over my lap or I am going to add more
Clare: fine (lays over her lap)
Selena: you need to know that what you did was not okay, do you know how scared I was after Demi called? Your my only daughter and I will not have you put your life at risk like that (starts)

Clare: okay (walks over to nick and he pulls her over his lap)
Nick: you are not going to lie to me anymore or keep secrets from me or anyone else in this family, and you will never put your life in danger like you did today (starts)

Clare: I am really sorry daddy (crying)

(Nick takes his belt off and starts)

(Nick pulls her off and sits her on his lap and starts rocking her back and forth while she's crying)
Clare: I i I am s s sorry (hugs him)
Nick: I don't want you to ever do something like this again, I love you so much Clare and I don't know what we would do without you
Selena: your dad's right Clare, we love you so so much (hugs her)
Clare: a a are y you s sure I I am n not a m mistake? I d didn't r ruin y your lives
Nick: Clare Marie Jonas Gomez I don't want to hear you ever ask that again
Selena: (tears in her eyes) who told you, you were a mistake?
Clare: t t the f fans t they h hate m me n no matter what I do I am never going to be as t talented as you and d dad (starts crying)
Nick: Clare look at your mom and I  
(Clare looks them in the eyes)
Nick: out of all our accomplishments that your mom and I made you are the biggest one, we are so proud to call you our daughter and we love you so much
Selena: and you are still so young your going to discover your talents as you get older so don't even worry about that
Clare: I love you guys (hugs them)
Nick: we love you too, now let's go back down stairs okay?
Clare: okay
With Alena and Tina
Kevin: you guys know that by not speaking up you put your cousins life at risk right?
Alena: yeah and we feel guilty about it
Tina: really guilty
Joe: this day could have gone really differently so from now on no more secrets understand?
Alena: yes
Tina: yeah
Kevin: alright your each getting twelve with the belt, Alena over my lap, Tina go with joe
Alena: okay (walks over and lays over Kevin's lap and he starts)

Alena: (crying) I am really sorry daddy
Kevin: it's okay (sits her up and hugs her)
Joe: come on Tina let's get this over with

(Joe pulls a sobbing Tina up from his lap and hugs her and calms her down)
Joe: come on let's go join the others downstairs

Clare's POV
The girls came back down and we just looked at each other and gave each other a hug.
Nick: how about I order pizza and we all watch a movie
Clare: can we watch camp rock?
Joe: you just love to embarrass us don't you
Clare: haha yeah it's pretty funny
Alena: I want to watch camp rock too
Tina: me too I love watching you guys when your young
Kevin: fine put the movie on
Girls: yay!!! (They put the movie on)
Clare's pov
I sat under the covers with my mom and Justin with my dad and Demi right next to them we were at the part when Jason was asking Shane if he could build him a birdhouse when we heard the door bell.

Nick: that's probably the pizza, I'll get it (gets off the couch and opens the door and sees Ricky) what do you want?
Ricky: look I know you hate me but i really want to see Clare for a few minutes please sir
Nick: (thinks about it for a minute) fine come on in
(Nick leads him to the living room)
Nick: Clare you have a visitor
Clare: (turns around) you came
Ricky: I told you I would
Clare: can we go and talk for a few minutes dad
Nick: fine but go to the backyard
Clare: okay
(Clare gets off the couch and walks over to Ricky and they go outside)
Ricky: I am so glad your okay (hugs her)
Clare: thanks (hugs him)
Ricky: what happened?
Clare: I guess the hate got to much and then we stopped talking and the crew just turned their back on me... I felt alone
Ricky: I am sorry that I left you, I shouldn't have
Clare: I want to say it's not okay because I was really hurt by it but I can't...
Ricky: why?
Clare: because I still have feelings for you, did you mean what you said earlier when you said you loved me?
Ricky: yeah
Clare: what about my family?
Ricky: I don't care, I have missed you so much, I have had a few hook ups but they meant nothing, I meant what I said I love you and I am not leaving you this time
Clare: even if my family is too "Hollywood"
Ricky: Clare I left you once I am not doing it again, I'll learn to tolerate your family if you even want to give me a chance
Clare: can we take it slow? I just got out of the hospital and I should focus on my health
Ricky: yeah we can go as slow as you want (wraps his arms around her waist)
Clare: this isn't slow
Ricky: I know I just want one kiss
Clare: (smiles) okay
Clare's pov
Ricky and I kissed for the first time it weeks but it wasn't fast or rushed, he didn't try to stick stick his tongue down my throat it was different then our other kisses but it still meant something and a few minutes later we pulled away.

Clare: you should go before my family thinks we are hooking up out here
Ricky: (laughs) okay can I see you tomorrow?
Clare: I'll ask, I don't want to sneak around anymore
Ricky: I understand let me know

They didn't question me about Ricky that night instead we watched camp rock and then when the pizza came we watched camp rock 2 and after mom and Justin went home but they said they would come back tomorrow and I went to the room with nick and Demi and got in between them maybe cuddling with them won't be so bad, and with that last thought I went to sleep.
