Chapter 18
Nick Fury's POV
Carol and I just got back from our vacation yesterday so the pressure is now on. I have to propose to Maria Hill. I'm the director of S.H.I.E.L.D for crying out loud, I can't be too chickenshit to ask the woman I love to marry me. I slap myself in the face. Get over it Nick, just do it. You'll never get your answer unless you go out on a limb and try. Her and I are currently having dinner at a Mexican restaurant in the heart of the city. It's called Mexicali and supposedly has the best tacos in the entire city. Maria apparently agrees with that statement because she downs taco after taco without any hesitation.
I smirk at her. "You're making me feel less guilty about having ordered two large quesadillas." She rolls her eyes. "Oh hush. You know how much I love Mexican food. They do food right." I chuckle, though it comes out more nervous than expected. We're surrounded by a lot of people. It's a Thursday night and payday was today for many people. People here in the city love to celebrate their payday from work by eating out. "Maria, there's something I want to ask you." She looks at me curiously as I begin to calm up which hardly ever happens. I'm Nick Fury, made of stone and ice, but yet Maria Hill manages to thaw my frozen heart. "Nick, whatever it is you can tell me. We tell each other everything and constantly fight side by side during battles."
I take a deep breath, pull the ring out of my coat pocket, and get down one knee. "Maria Hill, I've loved you since I first laid eyes on you as cliche as that sounds. Not only did I admire how great of an agent you are, I just loved you. Everything from your graceful fighting skills to your appearance to your personality in general. I love you. I'm always going to be in love with you because quite frankly there isn't another woman for me. With that being said, will you marry me?" Everyone around us stares in anticipation of her answer. She covers her mouth with a hand but nods a "yes." Cheers erupt all around us as I slide the engagement ring onto her finger. "Thank you for saying yes Maria." She laughs but in a loving way. "Thank you for asking Nick."
I smile softly at her. "I'm not in a rush to plan the wedding. We can go at our own pace. We can have a large ceremony or a small one down at city hall. I could honestly care less because I know that I'll be married to you. Spending the rest of my life with you is the greatest blessing of all, aside from my job that is. I really do love being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D." She squeezes my hands gently. "We're going to be okay Nick. No matter what we choose to do in terms of ceremony plans, we're going to enjoy every minute of the process." I nod in agreement. "I agree my love." A couple of customers offer to snap a few pictures of us together on our phones which we gladly accept the offer. Who knows, my proposal to her will probably end up on Youtube. After all, we're kind of famous already.
Hoped that you guys liked this chapter! I'm going to be out of town for the next couple of days (tomorrow and Monday) so updates might be stalled a bit until after I get back. Thank you for understanding! :) -Mary
