Chapter 20
Maria's POV
I have brought on Carol Danvers as my assistant to filling out wedding invitations for today. Nick and I already decided on the venue for our wedding. A rooftop wedding at Stark Tower. Pepper already gave us permission to do so. We both wanted to get married at a place where all of us would feel at home. During the ceremony, we also plan on honoring Natasha, Tony, and the rest of our fallen loved ones who died before the snap. Carol smiles at me. "Maria, you constantly tell me that you don't feel loved but look at how many people you're inviting. For every invitation that you fill out, it's another person that made an impact on your life and vice versa."
I blush bashfully. "I-I suppose. Despite being one of the best S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in history, I have low self esteem at times. I'm just like anyone else despite what the media says." She rolls her eyes at me. "The media can go piss in the Hudson River for all I care." I gasp playfully. "Don't wish that on innocent fish." The two of us then burst out into laughter and she puts her hands up in surrender. "Touche." So the wedding is set for two months from Tuesday. We wanted enough time to plan the wedding properly but for it to be close enough to not feel as though it's taking forever to get here.
Carol and I take a couple more hours to finish the wedding invitations before calling it a day. We end up ordering in Chinese to my place and eat together. "Carol, don't you have places to be soon?" She shrugs. "Depends on the calls that come in. So far, I haven't had any. I think the universe is trying to piece itself back together on its own. Many beings take pride in making things happen themselves without having an army of superheroes, mutants, etc to help them in the process." I nod. "That's fair. I'm certainly stubborn myself and often tell Nick to politely buzz off even though he means well when he wants to help me. Usually it's over the most mundane tasks too which I'm perfectly capable of performing myself."
Carol laughs. "That's actually really sweet. Nick doesn't show his sweet side too often but you seem to be the only person to bring it out in him. That goes to show that his love for you is truly devoted. You two are going to have the world's most marvelous wedding." I groan. "I see what you did there, slipping in that pun with your superhero alias. You're not as punny as you think you are." She wiggles her eyebrows. "I may be NErDy but only periodically." I groan and hide my face in my hands while laughing. Soon enough, the doorbell rings. I run to get the food since both of us are starving. I tip the guy and motion for Carol to help me get set up for dinner. We ordered a little bit of everything from crab rangoons to rice to wonton soup. We without a doubt have enough for Nick in case he comes home early. Cheers to a productive yet relaxing day!
