I got trapped in an elevator with Peter Parker during a New York blizzard and by the time we were rescued, one of us had a cold, one of us was laughing and both of us were pretty sure we had just fallen in love.
When I had decided to get a part-time job, I was mainly motivated by the fact that I hated having to always ask my parents for money when I wanted to do something. We also weren't particularly well off, so I wanted to start earning my own money. I applied everywhere I could think of that was in the vicinity of my parents' apartment in Queens, but no one was exactly excited to take a risk on hiring a sixteen year old girl with no work experience. After being turned down from more places than I felt like counting, I finally convinced a pizza parlor to give me a part time job delivering.
What I hadn't counted on was the disregard people had for food delivery workers. If I was late, the box was practically snatched out of my hands and the payment thrown at me, most often without a tip. I was also expected on time and with a hot pizza no matter what the weather was like outside. I had told my boss that since winter break was coming up, hoping that he would allow me to work some extra hours while I was off school. I got the extra hours, the problem was, winter break meant that New York was cold, gross, and snowy almost every time I went on a delivery run.
Which brings me to the elevator.
I was moments away from being late delivering the three pepperoni pizzas that had been ordered on the 15th floor of the apartment building whose lobby I was currently sprinting through towards the elevator. I smacked the call button for the elevator and almost cried in relief when the doors immediately opened. I hurried inside, jabbing my finger into the button for the twenty fifth floor before hitting the button to close the door frantically. The door started to close when suddenly a hand shot through the gap and prevented it, allowing a guy around my age to stumble inside the elevator carriage with me.
I cursed under my breath before turning towards him as the door closed, pizzas in hand and a wide, fake smile on my face.
"What floor?" I said tightly.
He didn't react to my question and despite my glare, I couldn't help but notice how attractive he was. One of his scuffed sneakers was untied, the dirty laces dragging on the floor. My angry gaze slowly moved up, taking in his slightly baggy, rolled up jeans and plaid button up shirt that was currently not buttoned correctly. He had a blue zip up jacket on and a backpack that hung off one of his shoulders, the jacket being the only thing he wore to keep out the cold. As I dragged my eyes up to his face, I noticed that despite his lack of outer wear, he looked unaffected by the cold temperature outside, his cheeks were tinged red and he was breathing hard. His head was down and as he leaned against the side of the elevator car, I noticed there was no snow stuck in his dark brown curls, despite the heavy snowfall I had just fought my way through. My eyes narrowed in on the white earbuds he was sporting, realizing that they were the reason that the guy hadn't answered my question, and lessening my irritation slightly.
I waved my hand at him, his gaze moving to me as his hand grabbed an earbud out of his ear, indicating he could now hear me. I took in the darkening bruise that decorated his left eye and his right cheek that was split open and sucked in a breath before deciding that his injuries weren't my business when I had pizzas to deliver.
Oh my God, he's adorable.
"What floor?"
"Oh, uh, sorry, I got it," his voice was higher than I thought it would be and it threw me off my rhythm enough for the guy to shove off the wall and press the button for the floor, I took note that he hit the 7 despite my bad mood and the fact that I knew nothing could possibly happen between us.
