It takes two to fall in love.
That's what he was always told by his friends that all had boyfriends or girlfriends. But Sonny didn't think that was quite right. Because he had fallen in love, even if his love was not reciprocated, it still existed and burned in his chest. He didn't need Brooklyn. Or maybe he did as technically he would have to exist for Sonny to have these feelings.
Wait, so maybe it does take two? It's confusing, just as his feelings towards him that should definitely not be there were. Regardless, as little he knew about love, he knew that felt something towards the younger Essex boy. Maybe it was how accepting he was when Sonny first arrived. After all, he had only really known Andy and met Rye and Brook once. On top of that, he'd never even met Jack, who was probably the most intimidating guy possible. He'd come in at such a late stage in the bands development that he wasn't sure that the fans would accept him. He was afraid of being compared to the previous member, Mikey, and afraid about not stepping up to the standards that were expected of him.
But Brooklyn had been kind to him: showing him the ropes when Andy was busy, constantly making him feel included in conversations and just genuinely being a nice guy. It wasn't a surprise when he started to catch feelings with the adorable faux blonde.
Sonny was in love. But Brooklyn wasn't. Or at least if he was, he was much better at hiding it from Sonny as he never gave any indication of being interested. Every time his thoughts wandered, Brooklyn would nudge him and claim he was in la la land. It was more like Brooklyn land but Sonny would never admit that to him.
Eventually, Rye had gotten bored of the two being super obvious to everyone but themselves, and tricked them into admitting it to each other. And that's when Sonny realised. It doesn't take two to fall in love.
It takes two to be in love.
