It's public holiday and so I decided to go to the beach. Even though Ahmad has been taking swimming lessons, I still warned him against playing close to the sea. We built a sand castle which was later stomped by someone who was riding a horse
"I am sorry" He apologised as I only nodded while Ahmad frowned "Come let's have something to drink" I held his hand as we went to get something but there wasn't anything decent to drink, they only had every selection of wine and alcohol. I remembered that I had packed a few snack at the car and went to get them, on returning I couldn't find Ahmad where I left him, his red shirt was floating in the sea
"Ahmad!!" I screamed causing attention "Mom?" I heard his little voice and turned around, I sighed holding my chest "Oh my God! Don't ever scare me like that" I said as I held him and called it a day. We went home and played video games
"Lights out" I sighed after losing for the sixth time "Just one more time" He whined "Uh uh! Not having that, you have school tomorrow" I said "Mommy I don't want to go to school" He folded his arms "That would be fantastic since I don't have a househelp, you would sweep the entire house, mop, clean, wash all the dishes and clothes, you'd also...."
"Good night mom" He pecked my cheek and dashed to his room as I laughed and switched off all the electronic devices.
"Be a good boy" I smiled at him "I love you" He said as he dropped off "Love you too" I yelled as he turned his head embarrassed "Sorry!" I mouthed as he shook his head making me laugh, I swear sometimes he be acting like a grown man
I was half an hour late to work due to traffic. Which means I get scolding from my boss and an extra hour to work. It was 3:15pm, I dashed out of office and got stuck at traffic jam yet again as I honked in annoyance causing a rhythm from all the honks at the traffic. After getting completely frustrated and drained, I got at his school but saw no one there except the security man
"Good afternoon" I greeted "Good afternoon ma'am" He responded "Please do you know if Mrs Frank had gone somewhere with Ahmad? I called her line severally but it isn't going through" I explained "She took a leave today" He replied "Where's my son then?" I asked "He left with someone" He replied "Who? Who's someone?" I asked as the school director approached me
"What's going on here?" He asked as I explained "Calm down madam, we're pretty sure it was someone he knows, Ahmad is a smart boy" The director said "Doesn't still give anyone the right to let him leave with a stranger, does it?" I asked and didn't get a response "Just pray that I see my son or I'd sue you guys" I left without hearing their pleas
I immediately called Linda and she said it wasn't her causing full alarm
"I'm on my way to your house" She said and hung up
"Na shiga uku (I'm in trouble)" I sweated profusely as I drove to the police station, I don't want to imagine the worse and so I kept saying 'Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raju'un'My breathe began to cut short, so I had to park to catch my breathe. The popular iPhone ringtone blast through my speaker as I immediately picked after checking the caller ID and saw it was Mr Brown the gatekeeper
"Hello! Yes?.... Haaa!... Thank you, I'd be on my way" I sighed a breath of relief as I turned my car and headed home. The gate was opened immediately I honked
"Welcome ma" Brown greeted "Thank you Mr Brown. Where is he?" I asked "In his room" He stated as I left, his door was slightly opened and I saw him going through his book
"Ehem!" I cleared my throat as he turned around "Mommy welcome" He smiled and came up to hug me but stopped midway as he saw my face
"What did I tell you about strangers?" I asked "Don't talk to them. Don't listen to them. I have no answer to what seek. Don't collect anything from them and if they forcefully offer, scream and run away" He said "And you decided to follow a stranger huh?" I asked and didn't wait for an answer as I scolded and left
I did all the house chores and served Ahmad but he hasn't left his room
"Ahmad if you don't come and eat your food this instance, I'd come in there and give you the whooping of your life" I yelled as his small figure appeared, he picked his food and dropped a note at the counter
"Mommy this is for you" He said and vanished to his room. I opened the note and it reads
'I am sorry mom :('
I went to his room and heard small sobs"Ahmad!" I called "Na'am!" He responded and quickly wiped his tears, I went over to him and embraced him
"I am so sorry baby, I just don't want to lose you" I cried over his shoulder"It's okay mom" He wiped my tears "Promise mommy you won't scare her again?" I asked "I promise" He stuck out his pinky as I intertwined it with mine and stamped it with our thumbs
"Come on now, I bought you new shoes and candies too" I held his hand "Yayyy!" He danced making me chuckle. There was a knock at the door
"Ahmad go get the door for aunt Linda, she said she was stopping by" I said washing the last tumble
"Mommy it is the man from the pictures" Ahmad said "What man?" I asked confused "The man that picked me up from school, he said he was going to come back" He said "I'm glad he's here sef, who picks a child from school without the awareness of the parents? Go and get me my hijab" I ordered as I arranged the plates, Ahmad returned like flash as I shook my head
I opened the door and my eyes bulge and got glued, my lips couldn't find words neither could my body find movement. Next thing I passed out
I woke up at the hospital bed and lazily looked around and sighted him
"Omar?" I called as he rushed to me "Oh my God! Alhamdulillah you're up" He said "Omar?" I called out again "Yes?" He responded as I began to cry, he held me and hushed me
"Is this a dream?" I asked as he shook his head in denial "I thought you had..." I was saying "Died?" He completed as I nodded
He sighed, "First off, I am truly sorry for letting you go all through this alone. The heartache, sleepless night, tears and everything" He apologised "About my survival, it all began in...."
