"Assalamu alaykum!" Habiba's voice echoed round the house "Amin waalayki salam" I replied "Mommy!" Ahmad screamed and raced towards me as I opened my arms widely to envelope his little body "My little hero" I smiled as I pinched his now chubby cheeks and observed he had gotten chubby in just few weeks... 'Mom!' I thought and smiled
"Mommy I miss you" He said "I miss you more little one. What has grandma been feeding you?" I asked "Lot of food" He sighed slapping his face slightly making me laugh. Ahmad being Ahmad
"Ehem!" Habiba coughed to remind us of her presence "How was your trip?" I asked "Hmmm! It's okay since No one cares about me let me get going" She said picking her bag as I rolled my eyes "My friend would you sit down there, don't you know that you're no longer a baby but yet you still want all the attention" I said "It's not my fault now, it's only Amina that has got everyone's attention at home, perks of being the last born" She sighed
"Which kin perks? The only attention you can get as of now is from your husband. So if you want attention, get married" I stated as she shook her head "I don't have your time, a sister starving here. Please tell me there's food" She said heading to the kitchen as I laughed
"Mommy I got you a gift" Ahmad said and handed me a bag "Awww it is so lovely, thank you so much" I hugged him, not bothering asking how he got the money because I know my parents so well
We talked all through the evening, every little thing we could talk about. There was a knock on the door and Habiba went to get it, she swung the door and just stood
"Who is it?" I asked "Some girl" Habiba replied "Let her in" I told her as she made way for the guest. A pretty lady walked in with red heels that matches her lipstick, a blue gown with a slit that stopped right before her knee and a brown turban. The house was already filled with her expensive perfume as she looked around the house
"You may have a seat" I offered "No thank you, my visit would be very brief" She said in a fine accent "How may I help you?" I asked "Is Omar in?" She asked as I and Habiba both looked at each other confused "Why do you seek his presence?" Habiba asked "Is he in or not?" She asked again as Habiba was about to respond, I told her not to
"No he isn't in" I replied "Okay then, tell him that Hanifa his ex wife ca..." She was saying and got interrupted by Omar's presence
"How did you get here?" He asked confused "Well hello to you too, ex husband" She said disgusted "What are you doing in my home?" He asked "I came to make our divorce official since I wasn't invited for the wedding" She shrugged as I felt my legs trembling, next thing I was on the floor with voices around me, I was rushed into the hospital. My eyes were widely opened but my vision was blur, after being attended to, I only stare at Omar. I don't know if I wanted him dead or the lady in blue dead first. I was beyond pissed, I felt my blood boil...six feet below they'd be if stare could kill
The doctor walked in shortly interrupting my murderous thoughts
"It is time for the baby to come" He said "The pregnancy is only seven months" Omar alerted "Yes I know but I'm afraid we might lose the baby if we don't take drastic measures" He explained as I looked at the doctor with horror"Could you please excuse us for a few minutes?" Omar asked as the doctor nodded and headed towards the door "Baby I am so sorry, it is not what you think" Omar said as I scoffed "Ohh okay" I only said as he walked out
How dare he walk out of the mess he put me through without apologising properly?
He walked in with the lady tailing behind as I looked away
So much guts
"Ma'am I know I am the root to all of these and I sincerely apologise, I would not forgive myself if I am the cause to a broken home. Omar and I studied at the same high school and has always been my prom date and I tease him by calling him my husband ever since. I really mean no harm and I shouldn't have taken the joke too far" She said as I only nodded
I am soo convinced
The doctor walked back in with some nurses who escorted me to the delivery room. Shots after shots, injections in my veins which were connected to several drips and I was in early labour. While the pain lasted for half an hour, our baby was out but it is really heart breaking because she was still prematured and had to be kept at the intensive care unit, I stare at her a little longer before they took her
I had a relaxing shower and went straight to bed afterwards. Omar walked in afterwards and changed to his sweatpants and a shirt
"Baby we need to talk" He said "Not tonight" I simply said as I wrapped myself up "Baby you have to hear me out" He urged "Omar please, I beg of you I really don't want to do this now. I get it, I have forgiven you, there's just a lot going on right now and I don't want any more drama. Okay?" I reassured as he nodded and I sighed
"Good night" I said "I love you" He said waiting for a response "Me too" I said
"Are you serious right now?" He asked "Can we not?" I sighed "Can't you just say you love me?" He asked "Of course you know I love you" I said "Then say it" He raised his eyebrows "I love you my husband Omar Abdurrahman father to my son Ahmad and daughter Fatima and the rest of my unborn children, happy now?" I asked "You just have to be extra huh?" He shook his head"Now go to sleep" I said "My head is killing me" He complained "And that is why you need sleep for staying awake all through last night" I said pulling him closer to me "That's the problem I can't sleep" He said "Insomnia kicking in again?" I asked "I don't think so" He said "Let me go get you pills" "Stay" He held me down
"So you won't let me sleep ba?" I stood. I checked all the drawers but couldn't any medicine, there must be at the kitchen "I'm coming" I said "Where are you going?" He asked "I said I'm coming" I rolled my eyes and slammed the door
As I walked by Ahmad's room, his door was widely opened and so I went in to check on him but he wasn't in bed, checked his bathroom and he wasn't there either. I checked Habiba's room to confirm, to see her still awake and on phone already answered my question that he wasn't there either.
I walked down the stairs to check the parlour as I saw him walking towards the kitchen
"Ahmad?" I called out but got no response as I followed behind "Ahmad!" I called louder but he didn't answer and reached for the knife at the counter
"INNALILLAHI! AHMAD!!" I screamed as I rushed to grab the knife from him "Mom?" He called as I remained shocked "What are you doing with a knife?" I asked "I wanted to slice my apple" He said as he showed me the large apple in his hand "By this time of the night? Why can't you leave it till tomorrow? Why didn't you ask for help" I asked concern
"I was hungry and didn't want to bother you" He said "Oh my God!" I sighed as I lifted him and sat him on the counter "I am your mother, remember? You could never bother me, next time you need anything tell mommy, okay?" I assured as he nodded
"What's going on here?" Omar asked as I explained "It is so unusual of him" Omar paused "Didn't you have dinner?" He asked as Ahmad shook his head in disapproval
God! Habiba!! A perfect example of the lazy Nigerian youth
We ended up having a feast
