Chapter 5: Callista's Birthday Part 2

We make it to some spot in the driveway. I know it's the driveway because I can feel the asphalt crunch underneath my shoes. My mom lets go of my arms and I can hear her walk ahead of me. I feel my friends standing next to me and the anticipation only grows because I can hear their snickering.

"You can open your eyes now," my mother instructs.

I open my eyes and in front of me is my dream car, a black Jeep Cherokee.

"Oh my gosh! Mom, thank you so much! I love it." I run-up to my mom and give her a giant bear hug and silently cry.

"Awe baby don't cry. I know you've worked hard for your diploma and even worked two jobs over the summer to save up for it. I saw how hard you were trying, and I decided that I would get the car for you and you use that money you saved for whatever you want."

She cupped my face and gave me a kiss on my forehead.

"I love you, little girl. And I am so proud of you."

"Thanks, momma. I love you too, so much."

We part from our embrace and Evan wraps me up in a big bear hug, effectively lifting me up off the ground. James and Emma join in on the group hug and we stay like that for a little while till my mom decides to break the silence.

"Do you wanna take your car for a test drive?"

"May I?"

"Of course! Go have fun. This is your day."

My mom hands me the keys and tells me to be careful. She walks back into the house and it's just me and my friends left outside. I turn to my friends.

"James, Evan, Emma, do you guys wanna give her a test drive with me?"

"I would love to come with you Cali, but I have some things to take care of. I'll be back later today to finish celebrating with you," James says sadly.

"Yeah, I have some things to take care of as well Cali, I'm sorry," Evan says looking down at the ground.

"Emma?" I ask

"I'm sorry Cali, but I have to go babysit my sister for a little while. I'll be back later today as well."

I sigh defeated and give them my best smile.

"It's okay you guys. I'll get to see you later today so it's not a complete loss. I'll text you guys if I make a stop somewhere."

They look at me with sadness in their eyes and give me a group hug.

"We are really sorry Cali. We promise to be back before the day ends to spend the rest of the day with you. Okay?" James says.

"It's cool you guys. Really. I look forward to your return," I smile at them.

They wave goodbye and get in their cars to drive away. I wave to them till they disappear down the road out of sight.

I sigh and let my shoulders slump. I walk to my Jeep and get in. I start her up and listen to the engine purr. I roll the windows down and adjust the seat to fit my height. 

"Looks like its just you and me Beauty...time to go pass the time in my safe haven."

We start off towards the nearest forest in town. The reason I call the forest my safe haven is because nobody knows about this one little spot that I found a while back when I was bullied in middle school. It's about a 40 min walk from my house but driving takes around 5-10.
