it was your birthday. you had recently graduated college and have now finally been freed from your student debt. you wanted to celebrate with your friends, but most of them were still in college and unavailable to party with. the only person that came to your mind was sungjin, your childhood friend. he had already graduated college with a bachelor's degree in musical composition. you decided to call him to see if he wanted to hang out for your birthday.

"sungjin! how are you?" you called into the phone.

"i've been well. i recently joined a band! i'm so excited for our debut!" he exclaimed. "by the way, isn't it your birthday?"

"yeah! i've paid off my student debt and i'm ready to sit back and relax! at least, until i get a job."

"anyway, i was just wondering if you wanted to hang out with me. maybe go to that new italian restaurant," you suggested, fiddling with your hands.

"oh, sure! you can meet my new bandmates too if you want."

"okay! The more the merrier!" you smiled, hanging up the phone. you hadn't seen sungjin in a long time. the thought of reconciling with him and meeting new friends excited you. you rubbed your temples, a sudden headache making you lay down on the couch. you decided that you would rest for a few moments, setting an alarm to make sure that you didn't skip the dinner. you drifted off to sleep.

"y/n! y/n?" sungjin entered your apartment, noticing that you were laying on the couch. he touched your head, noticing the hotness of your forehead. he looked at you concernedly before shaking you gently.

"y/n? do you feel okay?" you blinked, trying to stand up. your legs wobbled as you stood up.

"i think you should rest," he said, laying you back down on the couch.

"but our plans..." you muttered. you weren't feeling too good, to be honest. an overwhelming feeling of nausea stopped you from protesting further.

"don't worry. we can hang out some other time. you need to rest. i'll get you some food and i'll be right back." sungjin smiled, quickly putting a damp towel on your forehead before leaving.

"why did i have to get sick on my birthday?" you groaned. you closed your eyes, your headache paining you extremely. you drifted in and out of consciousness until sungjin returned.

"i got some 'healthy' food—" he spotted you seemingly asleep on the couch. he chuckled softly, putting the take out on the table. you opened your eyes, watching as sungjin patted your head. you blinked groggily, falling asleep once again.

"i wonder if i still feel the same way about you..." sungjin mumbled. you heard him, but were slightly confused by what he said. you drifted off to sleep, not waking up for a few more hours. sungjin was slumped over the table, the small kitchen light illuminating his face. sighing, you got up slowly. making sure not to wake him, you put a jacket on him. how cliche, you thought. it was almost midnight when you looked at the clock. i'm twenty-five now. what will i do? you looked at sungjin, remembering how close you were when you were children.

"hey... happy birthday." sungjin suddenly woke up.

"thanks."

"do you want to eat the take out?" you nodded, blinking slowly. you both sat at the table, the awkward silence unnerving you. you wanted to say something, but you couldn't think of anything to say. the clock chimed, signalling that it was midnight.

"so, are you gonna go home now?"

"maybe i'll stay here to give you company. It's too late to go home now. and besides, we still have to hang out."
