Remus looked tired – not to mention late – again when he entered Charms class this morning and even if he won't tell me, I know it's because of her, Olive Thompson, his girlfriend. They have only been dating for three weeks and she's already making changes on my bestfriend. She makes him ditch his friends - the marauders and me, his bestfriend since forever – for her, forget reviewing and lose focus on his prefect duties. Even James tells me constantly – more like whisper when she's around and talks in her annoying voice, telling Remus about Merlin knows what – that she's bad for him. Godric, Sirius may not say it but his facial expressions and excuses to leave are more than enough to let me know that he doesn't like her, as well. As for me, I don't show it let alone tell Moony about my true feelings about his girlfriend. Sure, her personality sucks but I don't want him to know that in reality, I am just jealous. Jealous that he likes her and not me. Jealous that he spends more time with her now. And jealous because I am not his girlfriend.
I know, I know. Cliché as this might sound but I love him. Longer and more than she ever does. Not that it's a competition but truly, he's not just a bestfriend-since-childhood to me. He's my first crush and first love. But he chose someone else and he couldn't pick anyone worse, in my opinion. Not that I'm his best option, either, but come on, I was the one to make him laugh when he's about to cry and he tells me about his dreams. With my blonde hair and blue eyes, I am just an average looking girl who has yet to know the techniques of putting on mascara. It is an understatement to say that I love books but he loves them, too! We exchange books and read to each other sometimes (without the cuddling). But that's all I am to him: a confidante, a little sister. Olive, on the other hand, is the perfect girl: black hair, green eyes, smart but cough bitchy cough. Boys are smitten with her and Remus wasn't an exception. He's still a boy, after all, attracted to girls like her. They got close when they would do Prefect duties together and that is something I didn't see coming. Because I thought, even just a little, he feels something for me. Well, I guess I was wrong.
"Oooohh, the royal couple is coming. Quick, finish your food, (y/n)," Prongs say to me as Remus Lupin, the Gryffindor prefect and Olive, the Ravenclaw's, are making their way to our spot in the Gryffindor table. "Oh my Godric, I can already hear her from here."
I laugh at that loudly and Sirius just choked on his pudding. So much for being discreet, Black.
"So I was thinking of wearing the red gown instead of the pink but I'm not entirely sure. What do you think babe?" she asked looking over at "her babe" as they arrived at where we're sitting. Of course, they were talking about the Yule ball. Who wasn't? Well, maybe me and Sirius (James asked Lily five times and was rejected six times) but seriously, that is two weeks away. There is still time to prepare next week so I don't see what the early fuss is all about. I just continue eating my dessert and ignore Remus' eyes pleading for help to change the topic. When it comes to fashion, he's not the best person to ask for advice and well, honestly, neither am I. I couldn't look at him, not when I could feel hurt by all this. Surely, what I feel can be reflected on my eyes. I am that expressive even behind my thick-rimmed glasses.
I feel James lean into me and say "How about you, me, Padfoot and Wormtail make a run for it before she starts talking about her shoes?"
I want to say yes, I really do but that would really be obvious to both Remus and Olive that we couldn't stand their presence – well, Remus is fine but nowadays, they come as a package.
"After a few minutes, Prongs. You have to be subtle," I whisper back, chuckling softly. On the corner of my eye, I feel Moony looking at us but I can't be too sure.
