I Miss You

The walk back to UA was a tense one. Usually Shinsou enjoyed the peace, the solace but he found himself wanting the silence filled with chatter. Specifically, chatter from one particular person.

Without the silence filled, he was alone with his thoughts. He hadn't made the right decision and that was hard to admit. He thought that distancing himself from Kaminari, and from his feelings, would make them go away. He realised it was a panic reaction. When you're frightened you find the easiest solution to take away whatever is scaring you and that was exactly what he had done. He had thought up a quick fix without thinking through the reasons why it wouldn't work.

He reached the UA gates and plucked the knotted braids out of his hair. He ran his fingers through it, but it was a lost cause, no doubt sticking out in odd directions. He hoped he'd be able to sneak up to his room, unnoticed.

He opened the door to the common rooms to see most of his class and A's watching a movie. He tried to skirt around the rest of the students but Midoriya waved him over to an empty seat. Not wanting to be rude, he made his way over while avoiding the all too familiar urge to look for a bright blond shock of hair.

Shinsou dropped onto the couch and was thankful for the dark room so hopefully no one would see his extra messy hair. He sunk back into the cushions and willed his mind to focus on what was happening on the screen.

After a few minutes of distractedly watching the movie, he felt his phone buzz with a message and fished it out of his pocket. There on the screen was a message from Kaminari. Three simple words.

I miss you

His stomach fluttered as he read over the words twice more before putting his phone back in his pocket and turning back to the tv.

How had he stupidly thought that time away from him would be enough to stamp out his growing feelings? What was that dumb phrase? 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder'.

Dumb? Yes.

Accurate? Also yes.

The truth was, he missed Kaminari too. So much.

He felt his phone vibrate again. And again. And once more before he pulled it back out.

I miss you more than you like coffee

I miss you more than you like bicycling

I miss you more than you like purple

Shinsou read over the messages and flicked his eyes toward where Kaminari was sitting, tongue sticking out while tapping out another message on his phone.

I miss you more than you like cats

I miss you more than you like bad horror movies

It was honestly the most Kaminari thing he could have done aside from throwing in a pickup line and the side of Shinsou's mouth ticked up without his permission.

He raised his face from his phone and looked across at the blond again. Kaminari flashed him a hesitant smile and when their eyes met, Shinsou realised he'd never stood a chance.

He felt his phone vibrate again and broke eye contact to look down.

Can we talk?

Then, I didn't send a single meme so I feel like you should reply

A soft laugh escaped his nose and he looked back up from his phone with a small nod.

On the other side of the room, Kaminari shoved his phone into his pocket and let out an exaggerated yawn. "All right, guys, I'm gonna hit the sack. Night," he said as he got up and headed to his room.

After what seemed like forever but was really only maybe ten minutes, Shinsou got up and made an excuse about going to bed too. He made sure no one was watching as he made his way toward the stairs instead of the door.

Unbeknownst to either boy, Sero leaned into Mina and whispered, "Do they think they're subtle? 'Coz they're really, really not."

On the walk up to Kaminari's room, Shinsou could feel his heart hammering too fast. He'd made up his mind to stop pretending and go back to being his friend. If Kaminari found out he was crushing on him then so what, he'd deal with that later. Right now he just wanted his friend back. Maybe that would ease the ache in his chest. Maybe it would make it worse. But he wouldn't know until he tried.

He raised his fist to knock on his door but hesitated, pulling it back a fraction. He still wasn't sure what to say. An apology, that's what Eri had recommended. He took a deep breath to steel himself and knocked.

The door was wrenched open too quickly and Shinsou had the relieved feeling that Kaminari had been nervously waiting on the other side for him.

"What's up with your hair?" Kaminari blurted. Of all the words he should have said, that's what popped out of his mouth but then Shinsou smiled and he didn't mind so much.

"I've missed you too."

Kaminari's mouth dropped open. He knew texting Shinsou he missed him would be a gamble but he didn't know the payoff would be that good.

"And I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, Denks. I got scared and thought pushing you away would fix it. I guess I just have some stuff to sort out, but can we be friends again?"

Kaminari felt the smallest bit traitorous for not admitting his feelings then and there but he couldn't risk scaring Shinsou off again. Having him as a friend was better than nothing. For now.

"Are you a freezer? Because I can see us chillin' together."

Shinsou rolled his eyes but felt the smile that had been missing since the spill incident return.

Kaminari grinned back at him and everything in his world felt calm again.
