I Knew There Was a Reason I Liked You

Aizawa stood in the training room at the front of the group of hero course students with Vlad King to his left. "In an effort to foster better relations between the classes in the hero course," Aizawa started, looking none too discreetly at Monoma, "You'll all be partnering with someone from the other class to prepare a report on their quirk; how it works, what limitations it has and how it interacts with your own, etc. Pick your partner and collect an assignment sheet on your way out. You have until next lesson to tell us who you're working with."

"Dude! This is the perfect opportunity for you! Who are you going to partner with?" Sero asked.

Kaminari scanned the crowd but saw, to his dismay, that the girls of 2B were quickly partnering up with the girls of his own class.

"All the babes are taken!" Kaminari lamented. Sero just gave him a shrug as he jogged off to find his own partner.

Kaminari scanned the crowd again and his gaze fell on a familiar mess of purple hair. He shrugged internally, figuring there were worse options as he looked toward Monoma who stood near Midoriya. He started in Shinsou's direction.

"Hey, Shinsou?"

"No," Shinsou replied.

"Come on, man. There's like, no one left," Kaminari whined.

Shinsou used to hate Kaminari. No, he'd hated people like Kaminari. Maybe hated was too strong of a word. More like loathed.

Kaminari was lucky enough to have a perfect quirk for becoming a hero, yet he was at the bottom of his class. If he applied himself, it would have been so easy for him to reach his goals. With such a heroic quirk, he could become the greatest hero of all time but instead he spent his time chasing girls and no doubt doing something else dumb.

"There's a reason no one wants to be your partner, Kaminari," Shinsou sniped.

"No one wants to be partnered with you either because your quirk freaks them out," Kaminari groused indignantly.

He also hated Kaminari for that. That ability to speak his mind even when it wasn't warranted.

And here Shinsou was, stuck as his partner for a big chunk of his grade in hero studies. He cursed his awful luck.

"Look, we both need a partner and no one wants to partner with you because they're scared of your quirk but I have a zappy quirk and I've heard Midoriya say that he got out of your trance by hurting himself. Everyone knows that I'm great at that so I'm not worried about it." He took a deep breath and grinned at him. "So, we're a perfect match up really," Kaminari finished sweetly.

Shinsou side-eyed him, "You're telling me that I'm perfect for you?"

Kaminari huffed a laugh, "I knew there was a reason I liked you."

"Alright, I don't think I'll do any better anyway," he said as he looked over to see the small purple boy pairing off with a reluctant guy from his class. "Can we not stay here though?" Shinsou asked and tilted his head to Bakugou when he heard a yelled, "Show me what you've got, you class B reject!" Who was sparring and yelling after quickly paring up with Awase. "Too much noise gives me a headache and those egomaniacs are loud."

"Everyone always laughs when I say he's obnoxiously loud! But you get it! Come on, let's go find some place quiet," Kaminari suggested and said a quick goodbye to his friends before they made their way to the library.

As they navigated the maze of tables and chairs, Kaminari asked, "Hey, Shinsou?"

Shinsou flicked his eyes toward the blond in acknowledgement.

"So, I was wondering if you would help me score a date with one of the girls in your class."

"No."

"Shinsouuu, why not, man? All you'd have to do is drop a few lines about how rad I am," Kaminari whined as he dropped into a seat at a free table.

Shinsou looked across at him as he sat down and pulled out his laptop. "I'm not a good liar so I couldn't tell them how rad you are. Which girl?"

Kaminari perked up instantly and then paused pulling out his things. "Uh, well I didn't exactly expect you to say yes so I haven't really thought that far ahead. Any of them I guess," he finished with a shrug.

"I didn't say yes. I just wanted to know who you want to go out with."

"Ugh, man. You suck. Fine, I'll do it without your help," Kaminari pouted.

After that, Shinsou suggested making a list of questions they could both work through and they quickly got started.

"What were you doing when your quirk first manifested?" Shinsou asked. Then when Kaminari didn't answer right away, he looked at him with a smug look. "Let me guess, did you short circuit the house?"

"Do you want an answer or do you want to be a smart ass?"

Shinsou shrugged. "Both."

Kaminari choked out a surprised laugh and answered his snarky remarks, thinly veiled as questions.

It was already normal to find the second year hero students spread throughout each other's common rooms while they worked on their reports together. So when Midoriya invited Shinsou to come and hang out after class the next day, he made his way over to the A dorms and no one gave his presence a second thought.

He scanned the common room for the familiar mess of green hair but his eyes fell on the electric blond instead.

Kaminari had one leg draped over the arm of a chair and a book in his hand. He looked the picture of contentment until he saw his foot tapping out the tune of a song only he could hear. He really could not sit still even when he was relaxed.

Apparently the foot tapping was annoying someone else because the small dark haired girl jabbed him with one of her ear jacks saying, "Would you quit it." She turned to him and her face changed when she noticed the book in his hand. "I didn't know you knew how to read," Jiro quipped.

"I don't, I just look at the pictures," Kaminari shot back before closing his book and putting it aside with a grin.

Before Shinsou left that night, he couldn't help picking up the book Kaminari had been reading. Treasure Island the title said. It was a translation of a classic piece of English literature. Shinsou didn't recognise it but the inscription on the cover told him so.

He had a hard time placing this new piece of information into the idea he had of Kaminari. Loud, annoying, flirty, bottom of his class, disgustingly friendly, Kaminari.

Shinsou checked the book for pictures, just in case.
