His laughter made Evan cringe. Jared of course thought all of this was hilarious. It was indeed Evan's stupidity that led him into the situation he was in.

He debated on hanging up the phone and just going to bed. That was until Jared said something that Evan hadn't even considered through all this. "Well. Since Zoe is out of the picture. Are you and Connor going to actually give this a shot?"

Evan paused, a hand going to his lips as the tingling feeling of Connor's kiss from earlier was still on his lips. He had pushed the idea that Connor had indeed kissed him out of thought before that moment. He wanted to tell Jared, but thought it best to keep that to himself. It had been all but an act, right? Connor had done it to convince his parents that she story he was being told was true. He had sold it well, why else would Connor kiss him. Right...?

Right. . . ?

"No, Jared. He clearly isn't actually interested in me," he said, sitting down on the edge of the bed, a hand going to his forehead. "We're going to have to fake a breakup once he's released. It shouldn't be that hard, right?"

Wrong

The next day at school was a nightmare. He had to sell it. Connor had texted him exactly what to do. Find the source of the rumor and confirm it with them. And little did he know, the starter would come to him.

Alana.

She approached him the second he came into the door. Bombarding him with questions. It was overwhelming. But the one that stood out to him. The one that settled his fate.

"Are you two actually a couple?" The hallway fell silent. And Evan could see through the corner of his eye, Jared smirking at him. I'd he were Connor, he would have slapped the smirk clean off his face.

But he wasn't. He was Evan. Lying, shy, anxious Evan. So he only responded in a hushed voice, "yes."

The confirmation sore like wildfire. And he could see people in the hall smiling at him, or waving at him. Part of it warmed his chest. That people around him would take notice, ask how his day went. He had even been approached by a girl who asked him about how him and Connor met. He thought it safe to explain Connor had gotten his email by accident and that they just decided to keep talking to one another.

All seemed normal. Except for one thing Evan didn't take into consideration. Zoe. Who had decided at lunch to ask for him to talk with her alone.

He agreed, and followed her out of the lunch room. His feet trembled. And she led him down hall after hall, stopping where no one was and turning to him.

He was nervous, looking in her eyes as she gave him a very serious look. "you're not fooling anyone," was all she said, and Evan's heart stopped.

"Wh...what do you mean?" He asked, his hand gripping the napsack. This was it. She knew they were making it up. He was finished. Screwed. Royally screwed. He wanted to curl up on the spot.

"Your emails. The trees?? That's all you ever talk about!"

Evan paused, an eyebrow raising. The first thing that shocked him was that Zoe even knew the contents of both his and Connor's emails. Did the entire family know their secret life? What did trees have to do with anything? Yeah, he would send countless pictures and talk endlessly about them. He just loves trees. But how did that connect?

Trees= faking a relationship with Connor Murphy?

It was lost on him.

"Trees are code for weed, right?"

Evan wanted to snort. He fought every fiber of his being to not. Hardly even cracking a smile. He was able to catch his breath for an moment, and his heart started beating again. Was that really her concern?

"You're selling weed to him, right? My brother doesn't care about that stuff, but with you he talks about it non-stop. So that means it's weed."

Evan shook his head, raising a hand in response to her accusations. "No. I can promise you it's not... I really like trees and Connor would entertain the idea that I did. It was something I'm passionate about and Connor loved that about me..."

He paused. That had come out so naturally. Zoe didn't look to convinced, but she only nodded.

"Well... Alright. I also wanted to say that Connor told my mom about your second email accounts... The ones where you guys became a couple and started sending emails about your relationship... She was wondering if you could print some of those emails ..."

Evan's breath left him again. It didn't even dawn on him that all those emails were completely platonic. Had Connor really dropped that load on him? He could only nod in reply and watch her walk away.

He wasn't physically capable of faking emails. Especially ones like that. But maybe there was someone who could.

And he found him sitting out back smoking with a few of his friends. Ignoring the fact that some of the boys called him "queer boy" (all except that one Michael kid that actually looked happy to see him) on his way out, he went directly to the one he was out there for.

"Jared. I need your help."
