Chapter 3 - A Day in the Life of Alejandro

Alejandro parked his blue convertible BMW M6 at his reserved parking spot. He puts on his sunglasses and strutted inside the elevator going to his office. He took his blackberry out once inside the elevator and checked his emails. He checked his schedule for the day, board meeting at 10, that's it.

He put his blackberry back inside his coat pocket and walked out of the elevator which stopped at 30th floor.

He went inside through the vestibule where the sign Velez Express is displayed.

The front desk receptionist said ," Good morning Sir," to which he replied with a nod.

He proceeded inside his office with Pam in tow.

"Pam, coffee please. And can you bring me those papers I need to sign. I want them all done before the meeting. Thank you." 

"Yes, sir! Right away,"   she said as she headed out his office.

Alejandro turned his mac on and took out his blackberry out,too. He puts it down on his table and checked on his emails again while waiting for the mac to turn on. 

He saw he had a missed call from his Mom. He smiled. His mom is in Cebu right now, she is home for the month before she goes back to the States where she is really based. 

He called her back and was answered after two rings,

"Hijo,busy already?" she asked. 

"Hindi naman Ma, I just got in, waiting for my coffee and our meeting at 10. How are you Ma?" he asked with a trace of smile as he talks.

"I'm good hijo. When are you coming to Cebu, I missed my baby,"  she said dramatically. 

"Not sure yet but Cebu is less than two hours away. I missed you,too Ma. Take care okay? I will just surprise you there, promise!" 

"Okay anak. Besos muchos. I love you."

"I love you,too Ma," he ended the call. 

Pam came in time after the call, with a coffee in one hand and a bunch of papers with the other.

"Here you go! The conference room is all set, should I order in something for lunch or will it be a short meeting?" she asked. 

"I'm not sure yet, Pam. Within 10 minutes of the meeting I will know, then I will let you know,fair?" 

"Fair enough! Need anything else?" she asked. 

He shook his head, "Not at this time, but thanks- the coffee is excellent. Thanks Pam." 

She smiled strutting out of his office, closing the door behind her.

Alejandro sifted through the papers and quick read them. He puts post it on some he has questions about and signed those he thinks is ok.

He checked his mac and opened up the file for the project he is working on. It was for a merger with another shipping company he is salvaging from bankruptcy. It is in the works and he is just finishing up the terms and agreement between the two companies.

He made a mental note to call his friend Franco who used to work for the company he is merging with. He wants to know a little bit more of its background from a known source- not what the company is presenting to them.

Soon after, it was time for their Operations Meeting. He asked Pam if everybody was there, she said they are. 

He walked inside the Conference Room which is adjacent to his office. 

"Good morning everyone. Are we ready?" he asked smiling.

There were about 14 people inside the conference including him. 

"So, let's see- progress reports, target profit etc etc," Reading the agenda out loud.

He sat by the end of the oval conference table and adjusted his coat when seated. He looked at everybody and told them to shut their phones off and focus on the business matter at hand.

When they are inside the conference room, he wants peace and quiet- no distractions from any electronic device, he wants everybody to seriously focus on what they are talking about- he is a perfectionist and he wants his company running smoothly.

They started the meeting and one by one they discussed the agenda - it looks like a long meeting- Alejandro asked Pam to order lunch for them so they can continue without any interruptions.

They had a short break when the lunch came in and continued til four in the afternoon. 

It was exhausting but they only do it once a month so it wasn't too bad. 

After the meeting Alejandro left the office early and went home to his condo. He had a headache after spending that long with his subordinates meeting the whole day. He was happy with the result though and he felt the day was productive.

He looked inside his fridge and see what he can have for dinner and found nothing. He decided to go out for dinner later, but after a nap and a long bath- he promised himself. 

He is craving for japanese food and he knows exactly where to go.
