The tournament had begun and Adrian had to say he was pretty intimidated by the Winston High team, but thankfully he wasn't going up against them yet. It was the first day of five, the first match, and hopefully their first win.
He looked up from the field to Bailey and smiled, his heart fluttering as he saw Bailey smile back, do a finger heart and mouth, “good luck”
Bailey sat with a few kids from other schools who had come to watch. Most of the kids watching were other teams, but where Bailey sat there were just people there to cheer. Adrian watched as a reasonably tall, lean boy, wearing a red flannel and a beanie, with boxy glasses over his eyes, tried to go past Bailey and almost tripped over his feet.
Adrian tried to hide his smile and restrain a snigger, clutz, he thought, as he saw him awkwardly apologize to Bailey, who laughed and seemed to say it was okay.
But his smile vanished pretty quickly once the boy sat down next to Bailey and started talking to him. He saw them shake hands, Bailey smiling genuinely, and felt something pool inside his chest.
He felt a tap on his shoulder and shot his ahead away from the scene in the bleachers, facing Blake.
“What are you staring at? Your boyfriend?” he said teasingly.
Adrian frowned and Blake looked at Bailey talking to another boy, laughing, and smirked.
“Ah, I see.” he said and chuckled, looking back at Adrian, “You're jealous.”
“Fuck off.” Adrian muttered, standing up, shaking his legs, “We have other things to think about.”
Bailey screamed joyfully at the top of his lungs, cheering loudly when Adrian scored.
He sat down again and stopped clapping, smirking smugly and said, “That's my boyfriend.”
“Oh yeah?” the guy next to him, Peter, said, only slightly surprised, “Lucky him.”
Bailey looked at him, his mouth open as if he were going to say something, but instead curved up into a smile, “I think we're both really lucky to have each other.” he held his hands in each other, watching Adrian with big eyes, “I really love him.”
Peter smiled, “Must be hard in school though. Aren't you from that all boys school? In the small town?”
Bailey nodded, “‘The school for messed up people’ is what I hear everyone call it.” he said bitterly, “And these guys are homphobic so it took a while for things to settle down when... Well, when Adrian came out, I guess.”
“Understandable.” Peter said, “I'm from Winston High.”
“Oh! The school with the cheerleaders and intimidating guys.” Bailey said without thinking, then shut his mouth tightly, embarrassed.
Peter laughed, “Yeah. Real punks.”
“So why did you decide to come for the tournament?” Bailey asked.
“My girlfriend is a cheerleader.” Peter said, and Bailey's eyebrows shot up, and he looked at Peter, who laughed again at his reaction, “Yeah, I know, I was surprised when she asked me out. But she broke up with me yesterday. Said she met someone else.”
Bailey's smile fell and he awkwardly looked back at the game, “Oh.” he said softly, “I'm sorry. You even came all the way here, all for nothing.”
“Nah, it's okay.” Peter said, “I enjoy watching football anyway. And I met you.” he bumped his shoulder lightly against Bailey's, making Bailey look at him and smile.
