Hi yall.
So here's another one shot that I written kind of a long time ago.
It's set after the Lost Hero and before the Son of Neptune.
***
It was the middle of the night and Piper couldn't sleep.
And really, it was no surprise. Lately, all she could think about was the deadline her, Jason and Leo had to finish the Argo II. In a few weeks from now, her and the rest of the crew would be headed west to California to try to reason with the Romans. It made her nervous how much relied on her and her charmspeak. She was supposed to sweet talk the Roman demigods into cooperating with them to fight this war, but she wasn't sure if she was ready for that.
And it seemed really unfair that just when she and Jason had finally started dating, they had to go save the world. But at least she had Jason.
Annabeth had it much worse. She wasn't sure if she was right and Percy was in California or alive. Piper knew it drove Annabeth crazy not knowing, though she tried to hide it. Piper was amazed at how Annabeth dealt with it. She acted calm and collected,, and didn't let anyone see how desperate she was for finding her boyfriend. She was easily the strongest person she knew.
But Piper could see right through that. She saw the helpless look in her eyes, the way she would look at the beach or the lake wistfully, as if hoping Percy would just appear out of the water.
Once, when there was no one but Piper and Annabeth in the Athena cabin, Annabeth collapsed at her desert, burying her head in her hands.
It had been a particularly hard day for her. Clovis, a demigod child of Hypnos, thought he had found a way to reach Percy through his dreams. They didn't know for sure, though everyone was optimistic that it would work but they had tried time and time again and... nothing.
Piper didn't know what to do or say to comfort Annabeth. Her shoulders were shaking and Piper realized she was crying, which left Piper stunned. Annabeth had soon become one of the strongest people Piper had ever met and seeing her look so vulnerable made Piper upset.
So she wrapped an arm around her friend's shoulders and let her cry.
And now, while Piper lay awake in her bunk in the Aphrodite cabin and staring out the window, she couldn't help but wonder-
Her train of thought rammed into a wall when she saw someone sneaking out of the Poseidon cabin in the dim lights of the greek fire torches. Piper knew it was Annabeth, she had seen her sneak into Percy's cabin a few times before. As she watched, Annabeth started walking towards the lake and before she knew what she was doing, Piper was tying her sneakers and walking out of the cabin.
When she got to the docks, Annabeth was already sitting there. She was wearing shorts and a oversized hoodie with letters stitched in the front that were too hard to read in the dark.
Piper sat next to the blonde, letting her feet dangle off the edge of the dock. Annabeth glanced at her but said nothing.
They sat beside each other in silence. Piper didn't expect Annabeth to say anything, so she was surprised she heard her voice.
"This is where he kissed me and asked me to be his girlfriend,," she said so softly it was almost a whisper. She wasn't looking at Piper. Instead she looked toward the moon reflecting of the surface of the lake, her eyes taking on a silvery color.
"It was August 18th, his sixteenth birthday," she continued, "We had just won the war against the Titans. I brought him a cupcake and we talked and he... finally kissed me and our friends threw us in the lake."
The wind blew Annabeth's hair around her face, But she didn't seem to care. Her legs were tucked under her and Piper managed to read out the words Goode High on the front of her hoodie, which was most likely Percy's. In the back of her mind, Piper knew she should probably be worrying about being caught by the harpies, but she couldn't bring herself to.
"Tell me about him," Piper said curiously. She figured it wasn't healthy for Annabeth to keep everything bottled up. If she wanted to talk about it and let everything out, Piper would gladly listen. And really, all she had heard from the Aphrodite cabin was Percy and Annabeth's relationship. Some of the things she had heard were hard to believe but she hadn't wanted to ask Annabeth and upset her.
"We met when we were twelve, and we've been going on quests together ever since. We didn't like each other very much at first because of our parents' rivalry, but over the years we became best friends. We fought together in the Titan War and by then I was head over heels for him," she laughed weakly, "when everything was over and we came back to camp and that's when we kissed and we started dating."
Annabeth smiled wistfully, "He had," she stopped herself, "he has black hair, and it's always messy. His eyes are green, seagreen like the ocean. He's taller than me by half a foot, and he always teased me about it, but only because I used to tease him when I was taller. He always smells like the ocean, and I'd always steal his hoodies from his cabin to the point that he asked for them back when I had taken all of them. He always knew what to say to cheer me up and he has a never ending list of bad jokes. His smile... " Piper knew Annabeth probably didn't mean to, but she sighed dreamily.
Piper tried to imagine that. She made him sound like the perfect guy and he probably was for her, "Everyone here seems to really like you two together."
Annabeth smiled sheepishly, "Yeah, they were really excited when we started dating," she looked at Piper, "I think your cabin had a scrapbook dedicated to us."
Piper smiled, "Oh, yeah. Lacy told me about that. It looks like there's a lot of pictures of you two. Like seriously, did you guys never notice people taking pictures of you?"
Annabeth smiled a bit, "We did, but there was nothing we could do about it. Percy always joked that we should just give them what they wanted. I think the last picture was taken the night before he disappeared. He... he told me he loved me. I kissed him and he said, 'see you tomorrow,' but.."
She trailed off, and didn't say anything. When Piper liked over at her, tears were rolling down her cheeks.
"Hey," Piper said, scooting closer to her, "What's wrong?"
"What if... he doesn't remember me?" Annabeth said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Piper tried to think of something to say to make her feel better.
"He's been missing for almost eight months now, how do we know he's even alive?" She cried harder.
"Hey," Piper wrapped an arm around Annabeth's shoulders, "Jason lost his memories too, but he got them back. Besides, from what I've heard, Percy is a really powerful demigod, and if anyone can go through this, he can."
Annabeth swiped angrily at her cheeks, "Do you know how long it's been since I haven't seen him for more than a few months?Five years. He helped me go on my first quest, we've saved each other's lives so many times since then and he... he's my best friend, Piper. I just want him back."
Piper had probably said the same thing about Jason when he had lost his memories (or his fake memories of her), but at least she had him with her. She couldn't even begin to understand how Annabeth must have felt, not knowing if she would ever see her best friend again.
"We're gonna get him back, ok? We'll go wherever we have to go, but he'll come back to you. I know it."
Piper probably shouldn't have been making promises she didn't know if she could keep, but she didn't care. If Percy was what it took to make Annabeth happy again and help them fight this war, they were going to get him back.
