Some ranting, some advice, some archaic reference, and a lot of cussing. My take on how I think fanfiction should be written and some of the biggest problems with it right now. Because I may not be the best at writing, but...
This isn't a writing tip, it's a fucking PSA, about when your OC travels.
"Upstate NY" is not a fucking borough of NYC, it is not a place you can get to within an hour from NYC, and it's not even a singular place. You wanna see a picture of New York State?

This is the lovely New York. You see the corner of that skinny penis looking island in the bottom right corner? That's New York City. Not the entire Long Island, just the fucking corner of it. You see the entire rest of the state?
THAT'S NOT NYC.
Look, I see so many fics where the OC lives in Queens or somewhere near Peter Parker, which is reasonable I guess, do what you gotta do to make the plot go. But then, the OC needs to visit Tony or who the fuck ever at the Avengers Compound and it takes them like, an hour to get there.
For reference, I live in NY. It's a lovely place, you should visit. I won't give you my address because internet security and blah blah, but I live between Rochester and Syracuse. (pronounce either of those right, I dare you) I'm in Central New York, meaning I am in the centre of the state.
If I were to drive the absolute fastest route, with perfect traffic, and only getting to the very very very tip that just barely lands me in NYC, it would take me over four fucking hours. If I wanted to get to Queens, it would take me nearly five hours. Mind you, the fastest route would actually take me through Pennsylvania and parts of New Jersey, not just NY.
Granted, the Avengers Compound is never given an exact location, and is just "upstate". But it's reasonable to assume that once Tony moved the compound from the Tower in NYC, he'd want it to be decently remote. Which would put it probably even farther upstate than I am.
It takes me less time to get TO FUCKING CANADA. I can get my ass to Canada in an HOUR. Less if I go by boat across the lake.
And furthermore, Upstate NY does NOT have the geography of NYC. It's not one big city. Don't treat it like it is. For context, here are some pictures of what NY looks like to me, as a New Yorker.
