Some ranting, some advice, some archaic reference, and a lot of cussing. My take on how I think fanfiction should be written and some of the biggest problems with it right now. Because I may not be the best at writing, but...
I've run out of ideas for actual serious helpful chapters on writing and fanfiction, so it's time to watch me go off the fucking deep end with small and pointless stuff no one cares about but bugs me to no end and on today's episode, we have music.
Okay so like, this is the smallest weirdest thing in the world, but it BOTHERS me, so I'm gonna rant my head off. Basically, in fics, often time the writer will mention songs that canon characters listen to and sometimes they're right, sometimes they're just guessing at the drop of a hat. Which honestly, valid. It's easy to say what kind of music Tony Stark likes because he listens to classic rock in the source material, but then with people like Natasha, it's more guesswork.
But you know who's music taste always gets fucked up in fanfic?
PETER FUCKING PARKER
Nothing annoys me more than character playlists about Peter or Peter's taste of music in fics being so glaringly wrong. Y'all pick popular songs or hip hop(?) for him and it's WRONG and I hate all of you for it.
The only song we have canonical evidence of Peter listening to is Left Hand Free by Alt-J, which was his introductory song in CA:CW.
Now a show of hands, how many of you have heard of Alt-J? If you found them through that movie, put your hand down.
It might be because this is a book and I can't see any of you, but I don't see any hands up, bitch.
(fun side fact, I was a fan of Alt-J long before I was a fan of the MCU, and I was always fucking annoyed by the annoying Marvel comments from "normies" on Left Hand Free videos but that's just my elitism showing)
Alt-J is an indie rock/folktronica band. Peter "I love Led Zepplin!" Parker does not listen to pop or hip-hop, okay? His dumbass is so deep into indie music, he probably doesn't even realize the bands he listens to are underground. Even MJ would make fun of him for having a weird taste in music, and she probably listens to punk.
Basically, let my boy be a dumb bitch who likes bands like Alt-J, okay? Overall, I find the headcanon of Peter being the ultimate memelord so dumb and I will die with the headcanon that he's a science boy who likes indie music and probably uses Tumblr and knows absolutely nothing about popular meme culture. It is a theory more supported by canon than anything you clowns come up.

Okay, now that I feel sufficiently called out by going through my indie rock playlist, I'm gonna leave it at that because y'all don't need to know me this well. Basically, the only popular artists you're allowed to say Peter likes are Hozier, Arctic Monkeys, and Radiohead and even those are pushing it.
I'm being overdramatic for the sake of it, but you get the point.
Basically, get creative when you give characters music tastes. Don't just assign them songs that you'd think they'd like because you like those songs, or the lyrics are reminiscent of them. It's boring and basic and y'all have got to get more creative than that. I could go on and on about what music I think each Avenger probably likes but frankly, I don't think anyone gives a flying fuck, so I'll shut up now.
