She's safe.

She's free.

She's with you.

She's... a little shaken but she'll be okay.

How could she not be shaken after everything she's been through?

Her eyes are open, but their sense is shut. Not in the guilty-of-regicide-and-murder Lady Macbeth way, but in the sense that she's not really reacting to anything going on around her or anything you say to her. She's curled up in your arms. Her body's warm against your chest and her breathing is shallow, but she's here.

You made it in time.

So why do you still feel like you won't make it and save y/n in time?

Why does this still feel so wrong?

Your comrades are fighting and they're winning. Your father is having no end of trouble now that he has to deal with both Escanor and Meliodas at once. You're moving y/n to a safer location, far away from the fight. You're bringing her to a safehouse where one of y/n's goddesses, you think her name was Athena, has set up a barrier. Elizabeth, no, Lizzy is staying there so y/n will feel secure and you can get back to the fight.

You set y/n down on a rock for a moment.

Why does this still feel so wrong?

Y/n isn't even sitting up on the rock. She's lying down as if she melted onto it.

Must be the shock.

You're far enough from the fight that the two of you should be able to rest for a moment. You pull her into your arms and she lays her head on your shoulder. She hasn't said a word since you left the dais. You keep whispering reassurances, but whether you're saying them to y/n or to yourself you can't be certain.

"We'll be okay."

"We're safe now."

"We'll be back home soon."

"It's okay."

"It's okay."

"It's okay."

But it's not.

You let down your guard and y/n got hurt because of it. How can she ever forgive you for something so horrible? You let down your guard. You let them take her when you thought she was safe. You were only gone for two minutes, but two minutes was all they needed to take her from you. They tortured her while you were trying to reach her.

You hold her tighter, careful not to squeeze too much but just enough to assure yourself that she's still there.

Why does everyone you love wind up hurt or dead?

You kiss her forehead and darkness pours out of her body.

No.

NO!
