Michael’s abrupt city visit was weird to me, but I guess he just had some urgent reason to see Meg. I just wanted him to make the right choice in whatever he was doing and protect the girl that meant so much to him.
Both of the guys left in the car decided to do some superhero stuff solo, so I just went back home and told Christ he could come over and work on the project with me. I wasn’t looking forward to getting pushed around by a bully for the first time that I would have to work on this project with Chris without anyone else around.
My mum and dad were at work, and my older brothers both long gone by now. I was all alone in the big house when Chris rang the doorbell. I opened the door and he didn’t greet me, walking straight into my house. “Where are we working?” He asked.
"My room upstairs," I replied. "Do you want anything to drink?" I have Mountain Dew."
"Sure, whatever." He came into the kitchen and watched me pour the soda into glasses, then took his and started for the stairs before I could put the bottle back in the fridge. I marveled at how close the Mountain Dew looked in comparison to the hair gel.
Upstairs, we set our glasses on the table that had my chemistry set up, then started on our poster.
All Chris wanted to talk about was girls.
"Oh, Peyton Holz is the best looking cheerleader I’ve ever seen."
"I like it best when they wear short skirts."
"How much actions has Bri been giving you?"
Girls, girls, girls.
He would not shut his mouth or even consider talking about the project for a second. But, on the other hand, anything that would keep him from picking on me I was fine with.
"How many pictures should we put on our poster?" I asked, scanning our notes I already had and looking at the information I had now put on the poster.
"I don’t know, you decide." He shrugged, downing the rest of his Mountain Dew. He pulled out his phone which was vibrating with a text.
He stood up and starting gathering his things, “Hey, I gotta go because my friend Noah is having a party tonight and all of the cheerleaders are going too, so I’ll see you tomorrow. Good work on the project, loser.”
He left before I even had the chance to reply. I heard him slip out the front door. I continued to do work on the poster for a little while longer, then decided to do some more with my hair gel.
It was at the same stage that it had been when then boys had eaten it. I put in the same amount of water that I had before, but i didn’t sizzle like it had the first time.
That was weird.
I stirred it, hoping that would cause the reaction I wanted, but it got me nothing at all.
I dipped my finger in the glass, the texture wasn’t the same as it had been the first time, it was much thinner now. I dipped my finger in and licked it off.
It wasn’t the gel, it was Mountain Dew. Chris had drank my hair gel out of a matching glass.
