“Jeremy!” Amanda ran into her best friend’s arms in tears once she had reached his cabin. He was the only one Amanda had confided in about her terrible past, “I’ve been kicked out of the crew because Captain Joyce found out about my mother,” she managed all in one breath.
“I know,” Jeremy responded, smoothing out her hair, “The whole crew’s been talking about how you were fired, but I’m the only one who knows why.”
“How did you find out?” inquisitive Amanda asked between sobs.
“I just figured.” Jeremy shrugged. “Why else would Joyce fire you? You were practically his little pet!”
“Where will I go?” Amanda wailed, moving on to the next topic.
“Calm down,” Jeremy soothed, as he held up two train tickets to New York, “I have that taken care of. I have family in New York we can stay with.”
“We?” Amanda asked, a tiny smile forming through the mountain of tears, “You mean you quit the crew for ME? That’s the nicest thing anybody’s ever done for me!”
“Amanda, you’re my best friend!” Jeremy smiled, hugging her again, “I would never leave you alone if the world depended on it.”
“Thanks,” Amanda said in a small voice.
